HAMILTON – Sage DiGiulio and
Julia Lindsey registered their first goals of the season and Colgate battled back from a pair of deficits to earn a 2-2 draw against Columbia Friday night in front of a record crowd at Beyer-Small '76 Field.
Columbia had the early chances and struck first in the 23rd minute before Colgate responded less than three minutes later to draw the match level.
Dom DeMarco dangled around a defender and passed ahead to
Ellis Miller, who set up shop in the Columbia corner. Miller served a cross into the box, where
Sage DiGiulio connected for the one-timer marker in the 26th minute.
The match remained level until Columbia struck with less than a minute left in the half. Amalya Johnson redirected a cross from Maddie Temares to give the Lions a 2-1 lead at intermission.
The Raiders earned their chances through the second half stages.
Emily Amano had a breakaway shot saved and Miller was stunned on a penalty-kick diving save.
But Colgate did not quit and Lindsey knotted the game at 2-2.
Ruby Diodati off a corner kick served a cross into the box, where Lindsey sent a header into the netting for the equalizer in the 71st minute.
Neither side would gain an edge over the final 19 minutes of regulation.
Colgate controlled the majority of possession in overtime. Amano earned the best scoring chance after Lions keeper Liz Matei misplaced a loose ball and was out of position. She recovered just in time, however, and Amano's shot was cradled to end the opportunity.
Despite the Raiders' offensive chances, Colgate and Columbia would finish in a 2-2 draw.
BOTTOM LINE
Colgate 2, Columbia 2 (2OT)
QUOTES
Head Coach Kathy Brawn
On the game:
"After a slow start against a talented team, we fought our way back and overcame a lot of different things. The second half was different from the first – our pace and level of determination – was much better.
On erasing deficits twice:
"I am proud of our effort to fight back twice tonight. It was great to see Julia step in and score. Ellis' battle for the ball and Sage's pretty finish, that is what we expect this year. We are moving in the right direction.
On the crowd:
"The atmosphere was incredible tonight. This was one of the best crowds I have ever seen here. It certainly helps; we notice it on the field and it gives us even more motivation."
