Raiders Claim Heat Wins at Murphy

Colgate Captures Heat Victories in Varsity Eight, Novice Four

Murphy Cup Results

COOPER RIVER, N.J. –
Colgate opened its men's rowing schedule with a solid performance at the Murphy Cup.

The Raiders won a pair of heats, first in the Varsity Eight and then in Novice Four. In the Varsity Eight, Colgate won its heat handily by nearly 10 seconds over Temple, with Lehigh and Rhode Island following. The Raiders weren't quite as sharp in the final, which was contested in worsening conditions, but Colgate came in fourth overall.

"They felt they did not row as clean in the final but they still improved on last year's result," Raiders assistant coach AC Chacon said. "They know we will be faster when we get the rest of the top boat together again.

"For this time of year, though, and having not been on the water in more than a week, we are ahead of where we were a year ago at this time."

In the Novice Four, Colgate raced alone because no other boat made it to the start. But the Raiders posted the fastest time of either heat and then the schedule final was scratched because of weather.

"They had a faster time than any Varsity 4 event that preceded their own," Chacon said. "They rowed well and used a novice women's coxswain, Katie Murray. It was her first race – ever!

"She did great and even managed with the three inches of water they had taken on and carried in the bottom of the boat."

The scheduled pairs event also was canceled.

Colgate's crew and results were as follows:

Novice 4+
Cox: Katie Murray.
Crew: 4 David McKay, 3 Christoffer Hovard, 2 Seth Rosen, 1 Chase Zammit.
Finish: Colgate finished first in Heat 1 and posted the best overall time at 7:14.83. The final was canceled.

Varsity 8+
Cox: Tali Filstein.
Crew: S Matt Oakley, 7 Alex Damjanovic, 6 Luke Smith, 5 Ben Moffa, 4 Gian Civitello, 3 Peter Rex, 2 David McCarthy, B Connor Appleyard.
Finish: Colgate finished first in Heat 3 with a time of 6:09.60, nearly 10 seconds better than Temple. The Raiders placed fourth in the grand final with a time of 6:13.46. Drexel won the final in 5:57.56.
