WEST POINT, N.Y. – Colgate's playoff run came to an end on Tuesday night with a 4-0 loss to Army in the Patriot League Tournament quarterfinals at Malek Stadium.
The loss does not take away from what the Raiders had to do to reach the postseason. It started with the program's first ever win over Boston University, snapping the Terriers' NCAA-leading 53-game home conference unbeaten streak that had gone all the way back to 2007.
Then the Raiders went into second-place Loyola needing a win to stay alive. The game was a seesaw battle and had all the makings of a scoreless draw, but
Lexi Mitchell changed everything with the game-winning goal with less than three minutes left in double overtime to keep the postseason hunt alive.
Once again needing a win against Army in the regular-season finale, Colgate stepped up once more on Senior Day.
Ruby Diodati scored in the 12th minute and
Kelly Chiavaro recorded five saves to lead Colgate to a thrilling 1-0 triumph. The Raiders had pulled off their fifth consecutive shutout to reach the postseason for a Patriot League record 12th consecutive season.
But the unbeaten streak would come to an end in the quarterfinals. Army proved why it deserved the No. 3 seed with the opening goal just over four minutes into the match. A throw-in entered the box and Lauren Drysdale got the finishing touch with a one-timer to the back of the net for the go-ahead marker 4:17 into the game.
Army (8-6-4, 4-3-2 Patriot) continued the pressure and made it 2-0 in the 15th minute before padding their lead again late to carry a 3-0 lead into halftime.
Colgate (5-9-4, 3-3-3 Patriot) needed a quick second-half strike to flip the script, but Army shot back with the dagger in the 53rd minute. The final 20 minutes featured waves of possessions for both teams, but the Black Knights ultimately held on to secure the 4-0 victory.

On the result:
"We have been playing playoff soccer for three weeks now and it was an impressive run for sure, but for our seniors to have to walk off a field after the careers that they've had, the effort they've put in, and the leadership they have displayed was disappointing.
"Some of our injuries caught up to us a little bit and we just ran up against an Army team that played a great game and had a phenomenal game plan. They put us on our back early and we never recovered from it.
"Credit to our players for never giving up in the game and sticking together. There are certainly a lot of positives for the future and we will look to build on those things. We will send our seven seniors off in appreciation for what they've done here over the last four years."
