BOSTON – A late goal in overtime gave Boston University a 2-1 win over the Colgate men's soccer team on Saturday evening at Nickerson Field.
In a back-and-forth Patriot League battle, the Terriers came out strong and netted the go-ahead marker early. Colgate (2-5-4, 1-2-1 PL) bounced back and controlled the pace of play through large portions of the second half before Boston University (1-9-1, 1-3 PL) found the final stride in the Raiders' fifth overtime game this season.
A quick strike by Boston University's Matt McDonnell handed the home team a 1-0 lead. Kari Petursson booted a corner kick into the center of the six-yard box, where McDonnell one-timed the cross off his chest for the go-ahead tally in the eighth minute.
The Terriers held their 1-0 lead late into the second half until Colgate found a breakthrough in the 74th minute. The Raiders possessed the ball in their attacking third and
Edward Bass converted on a cross to level the contest late.
Kentaro Morrison from the left wing centered a pass into the 18-yard box, where Bass banged home a left-footed blast high into the net for the equalizer with just over 16 minutes left.
The game remained tied into overtime until Boston University struck the game-winner in the 99th minute. Satchel Cortet headed in a long free kick from Lacu Lopez and it just snuck under Harris' hands inside the right post for the golden goal with 1:44 left in overtime.
In a strong second half for Colgate, Morrison produced a scoring chance in the 55th minute, when the senior beamed a shot from the top of the 18-yard box that forced Stone to leave his feet and make a diving save. Moments later, Stone leaped to knock a header from Muckstadt over the crossbar in Colgate's best scoring chance of the game to that point.
Harris returned the favor on the other end with a spectacular save on a penalty kick in the 69th minute. The shot came in and Harris dove correctly to his left before getting both hands on the ball to deflect it outside of the post to keep it a one-goal deficit late.
The defensive effort shifted momentum over to the offense and paid dividends on Bass' game-tying goal in the 74th minute. The back-and-forth battle ultimately finished in the home team's favor with Boston University picking up its first win of the season.
