BOSTON – Backs against the wall, the Colgate women's soccer team picked the perfect time for the program's first-ever win over Boston University.
Leah Lewis scored late in the second half,
Sophia Boggs tallied three saves and Colgate spoiled Boston University's senior day with a 1-0 triumph on Saturday at Nickerson Field.
The win snapped Boston University's 53-game unbeaten streak in home conference games, which was the longest active streak in the NCAA.
Colgate (3-8-3, 1-3-2 Patriot) finished with 11 shots on goal to Boston University's three. In the pivotal Patriot League showdown, it was Lewis' header in the 63rd minute that made the difference.
Julia Lindsey booted a corner kick to the top of the 18-yard box and Lewis crashed in to head home the one-timer over everybody for the go-ahead goal.
The Raiders stuck the throttle down and tallied the next five shots on frame.
Dom DeMarco and
Adrienne Vaughn each had two and
Hannah Pinkus registered another in the 79th minute but Terriers keeper Morgan Messner kept her team in it.
Boston University (5-9-2, 2-3-1 Patriot) pressed hard in the final 10 minutes. Kate Collins hit the crossbar in the 85th minute before Boggs made a crucial save moments later. A long cross entered the six-yard box and Geo Pereira redirected a shot on net, where Boggs dove to her right for the save. She was unable to corral the ball, however, but
Sydney Maxson at the goal line quickly pivoted and sailed a clearing kick away from the goal mouth.
The final four shots went to Boston University, but Boggs and the Colgate back line stood tall to preserve the 1-0 shutout victory.
Colgate dominated possession in the first half, yielding just one shot on goal and Boggs was up to the task on Chloee Sagmoe's offering in the 27th minute.
Jennifer Bartlett earned Colgate's best chance late in the half after
Abby Sotomayor led her with a pass down the left side. Bartlett raced in and drilled a high shot that was deflected by Messner just over the crossbar and the two teams were still scoreless at intermission.
Colgate continued to have strong possessions in the second half, and it paid dividends on Lewis' late game-winning goal behind a stellar defensive effort in the 1-0 victory.

Head Coach Kathy Brawn
On the win:
"Given the context, this is one of our program's biggest wins in recent history. I remain impressed by, and proud of the women on this team for their perseverance, adaptability and cohesiveness.
"Boston University is among the toughest teams to beat on their home turf, which makes the victory that much more impactful. Leah's goal from Julia's corner was fantastic and the team rallied together to earn the win. We'll enjoy this for a minute, and then get prepared for a talented Lehigh side."
