Morrison’s Golden Goal Leads Colgate Past Vermont

Raiders Defeat Vermont in Double Overtime, 1-0

BURLINGTON, Vt. – Kentaro Morrison scored the golden goal in the 102nd minute and Jacob Harris recorded a season-high six saves to lead the Colgate men's soccer team to a thrilling 1-0 double-overtime victory over Vermont on Tuesday night.

Morrison picked a good time for his first goal of the season. Kian Alberto lofted a long through ball over the Vermont back line and to the left side of the box, where Morrison quickly controlled the pass and rifled a shot on target. His initial shot was saved but Morrison volleyed his own rebound and buried the game-winner 1:23 into double overtime.

Morrison's golden goal came on the heels of a dominant first overtime period in which the Raiders outshot Vermont 3-0. Combined with the second extra session, the Raiders rattled off the final five shots of the contest after Vermont held a 14-9 advantage in regulation.

Harris was stellar in net en route to his fifth shutout of the season in the win. Four of his six saves came in a busy first half, including two off a late corner kick in the 40th minute. He recorded another save in the 43rd minute to send the match to halftime scoreless.

Morrison nearly had the go-ahead marker in 56th minute but his low shot was saved by Aron Runarsson. Colgate continued to press offensively and earned two corner kicks in the 59th minute but the Raiders were unable to cash in.

The save of the game came in the 66th minute after Vermont's Joe Morrison worked his way into space on the right side and went in on a breakaway. Harris raced out to eliminate the angle and dove to redirect the shot. Morrison got a second crack at the rebound and his shot was saved by a defender before it crossed the goal line.

Lucas Lezcano came away with one of Colgate's better opportunities on a high shot that was out of reach of the Catamount keeper but sailed just wide of the left post. John Muckstadt struck a shot on frame in the 75th minute in what would be one of Colgate's better scoring chances down the stretch in regulation.

The Raiders continued to wear down the home team before dominating possession in overtime. Colgate outshot Vermont 5-0 in the two extra sessions before Morrison sent the Raiders home with the game-winner early in double overtime.
