WEST POINT, N.Y. – Kelly Chiavaro made two saves in net and the Colgate women's soccer team controlled possession throughout the contest but the Raiders and Black Knights of Army battled to a scoreless draw Saturday evening in Patriot League action at Malek Stadium.
Colgate pressured offensively for the majority of the opening half but scoring chances were hard to find. The best opportunity for the Raiders came in the 9th minute when
Ruby Diodati fired a shot on goal off a corner from
Emily Amano. The low shot made its way through a scrum in front but Army keeper Sydney Cassalia punched it away.
Sydney Maxson tallied two shots on goal and Amano served a cross into the box for
Adrienne Vaughn late in the half, but a strong defensive play from the Black Knights blocked the attempted one-timer.
The Raider defense continued to stifle their opponents, as Army's only shot on goal in the half came in the 34th minute. Kalie Rosenberger created space down the right side but Diodati shrugged off her angle and forced a long shot from outside that Chiavaro scooped up for the relatively uncontested save. With time winding down, Kayleigh Stallings sailed a long shot from 20 yards out over the crossbar to send the match to halftime with no score.
Army nearly got on the board in the 61st minute after a cross was served into the box. Morgan Walsh connected on the pass with a header towards the net but it bounced once and caromed off the crossbar.
Amano and
Dom DeMarco had a couple of early corner kicks blocked away by the Black Knights, with the second one sailing close to the goal but a Raider foul nullified the opportunity.
With just over 10 minutes left in regulation,
Abby Sotomayor earned a free kick from just outside the box and she blasted a shot on net but it landed in the arms of Cassalia. The Black Knights' keeper made another save on a header by
Leah Lewis from the center of the box and
Ellis Miller sailed a set piece wide from 25 yards out in the final minute to send the match to overtime.
Colgate earned four corner kicks in the extra sessions, including two in the final minute of the first overtime, but the Raiders could not capitalize. DeMarco forced a save on one last shot with 15 seconds left in the second overtime as the two teams played to a scoreless draw.
