STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The Colgate volleyball program concluded preseason tournament action on Sunday afternoon with play against the home team at the Stony Brook Tournament. Although the Seawolves earned a 3-0 sweep of the Raiders on their home court, Colgate's
Amanda Smith and
Jaelah Hutchison were named to the All-Tournament Team for their team-leading offensive efforts on the three-match weekend.
The most narrow of the sets, the Raiders and the Seawolves saw two tie scores and a single lead change through the opening set, which started out a narrow game. The defending America East Champions were then able to break ahead of the Raiders and only sacrifice just a single tie score through the remainder of the match on its way to the sweep of Colgate. The Raiders continued to push back, and went on a four-point run late in the third set, before Stony Brook sealed the final set by a 25-20 score.
Colgate will be back in action next weekend as the program begins conference play against Holy Cross and Army West Point.
STATISTICAL STANDOUTS
• Freshman
Julia Kurowski led the Raiders offensively with seven kills on the afternoon, while hitting a team-best .538 on her 13 attempts at the net. In addition to her attacking game, Kurowski marked 25 kills, as well as the lone service ace for the Raiders. A native of Lancaster, New York, Kurowski has now marked an ace in back-to-back matches, and has tallied three in the last five matches.
• Six kills came from senior
Jaelah Hutchison against Stony Brook, upping her total on the weekend to 26, and good for a spot on the All-Tournament Team. After being named to the All-Tournament Team at the Cal Molten Classic, it marks the second time in the season's four tournaments that Hutchison has earned All-Tournament Team recognition. In addition to her offensive game, Hutchison also jumped for six total blocks on the weekend, having a hand in a third of all Colgate blocks in the Stony Brook Tournament.
• Earning her second consecutive All-Tournament Team honor was senior
Amanda Smith, as she marked 23 total kills on the weekend. A two-way player, Smith posted four total blocks at the net on the weekend, while her play against Stony Brook featured six kills and two digs.
• With 13 digs, sophomore
Bridget Kolsky marked her ninth double-digit kill match of the season. A varied defensive game, 14 different Raiders marked at least one dig against Stony Brook.
THE BOTTOM LINE
• Stony Brook 3, Colgate 0 (25-14, 25-15, 25-20)
RECORD UPDATES
• Colgate holds a record of 5-7 on the year, completing non-conference action.
• Stony Brook improved to 6-8 on the season.
COACH BAKER'S TAKE
"It was a disappointing match in many ways. Our effort level was low from a good portion of our lineup. We certainly had a very tough schedule in severe heat. Playing three matches in 24 hours is tough for any team, but we need to be tougher."
"We will bounce back and get after it again as we start league play. Preseason is about lessons and we learned a lot. We still have more to learn which is exciting. It's not about peaking in September. I know we will be ready by Friday."
ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM
• MVP: McKyla Brooks, Stony Brook
• Kiani Kerstetter, Stony Brook
• Maria Poole, Stony Brook
•
Amanda Smith, Colgate
•
Jaelah Hutchison, Colgate
• Julia Flynn, Bryant
• Cailey Bracken, Delaware
