VESTAL, N.Y. – The in-state rivalry between the Colgate men's soccer team and Binghamton continued with a 1-1 double overtime draw Friday night in non-conference action at the Bearcats Sports Complex.
Â
The opening 45 minutes featured strong opportunities on both ends of the pitch but the two teams went into the locker room with the match still level at 0-0.
Jacob Harris came up big with three stellar saves, including one on a point-blank shot in the final seconds of the half, to keep the match scoreless.
Â
Colgate came out strong in the second frame and quickly broke the scoreless draw in the 50th minute.
Kian Alberto won a battle to a 50/50 ball at midfield and stuffed a lead pass to
Kentaro Morrison racing in on goal. Bearcat keeper Chris Shutler sprinted out to intercept the pass, but Morrison retrieved the ball near the top of the box and cut inside Shutler before firing a low shot to the empty net to give the Raiders a 1-0 lead.Â
Â
Harris and the Raider back line held tough until Binghamton broke through in the 75th minute. A long through ball entered the box that was redirected by a Colgate defender. The redirection found Haris Brkovic from 20 yards out, where he lifted a high shot past a diving Harris to tie the match at 1-1.
Â
The two squads traded chances in search of the game-winning goal, but both defensive units stood tall down the stretch to send the match to overtime.
Â
Colgate controlled offensive possession in the extra sessions, outshooting Binghamton 3-1 over the final 20 minutes.
Oliver Harris forced a save in the 97th minute and
Freddy Jonsson had a point-blank shot deflected just wide in the 107th minute as the two teams battled to a 1-1 draw.
