LOS ANGELES – Full team efforts led the Colgate softball team to a pair of big wins Friday as the Raiders took down Monmouth 7-2 before beating Fairfield 3-2 at the LMU Tournament.
Seven different Raiders knocked in runs in the 7-2 win over Monmouth, while senior
Kyle Griswold earned the win in the circle. The Raiders then erased a 2-0 deficit with three runs in the final two innings to come back for a 3-2 victory over Fairfield. Sophomore
Jessica Hay put together a strong complete-game effort to take home the win against the Stags.
After a scoreless first inning in the day's opener against Monmouth, the Raiders used an RBI double from first-year
Christiana Cottrell and an RBI single from junior
Meghan Romero to take a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second. Sophomore
Nicole Rounsavill led off the third frame with a solo home run before first-year
Mia Guevarra smoked an RBI triple and sophomore
Jordan Miller drove in another run to give the Raiders a 5-0 lead through three frames.
Griswold kept the Hawks off the board until the fifth when Monmouth scored twice to pull within 5-2. Colgate got the runs right back in the sixth thanks to RBIs from senior
Holly Geranen and sophomore
Virginia Irby. First-year
Bella Crow closed out the win in the circle, allowing just one hit in the final 2.1 innings to seal the 7-2 victory.
Fairfield put up single runs in the first and second innings of the nightcap to take an early 2-1 lead. The Raiders were able to get on the board in the bottom of the fifth when Romero smacked a solo home run to right center to pull Colgate within 2-1 through five frames.
Guevarra drove in the game-tying run in the bottom of the sixth as her sacrifice fly allowed Rounsavill to run home and knot the score at 2-2. Miller then followed with a two-out double to score first-year pinch runner
Olivia LaQua and put the Raiders on top 3-2 heading into the final inning.
Hay closed out her complete-game effort by retiring the Stags in order in the top of the seventh to cement the 3-2 Raider win.
