Colgate Rallies in Fourth, Falls to Boston U. in Overtime

Koren, King Shine for Colgate Down Stretch in Tough 66-64 Loss to Terriers

BOSTON – Chelsey Koren scored 10 points in the fourth quarter to spearhead the Colgate women's basketball team's rally Wednesday night at Case Gym, but the Boston University Terriers overcame the Raiders in overtime, 66-64.

Koren closed the game with 15 points for the Raiders and grabbed five rebounds, while Summer King also had 15 points to go along with eight rebounds and three steals.

Heading into the fourth quarter, the Raiders trailed 40-36 and the Terriers used a 5-0 run to extend their lead to nine points three minutes into the period. But the Raiders didn't give up, going on an 11-2 run to tie the game 47-47, led by a pair of Koren threes and a three-point play from Tori Pozsonyi with 5:04 to go in the quarter.

Both teams traded points the remainder of the way with Colgate able to take a four-point lead, 58-54, with 14 seconds left in regulation. Boston University managed to tie the game with 2.7 seconds to go after a 3-pointer from Katie Nelson and a made free-throw from Naiyah Thompson to force overtime.

King was big for the Raiders in the extra session as she scored four points while continuing to play with four fouls. Both teams once again traded baskets, with Colgate hanging on to a 64-62 lead with 2:07 to go in the period before Boston University's Nia Irving made a layup a minute later. Irving scored the game-winning layup with 38 seconds to go in overtime. The Raiders had a couple chances to tie the game late, including a shot from Tegan Graham right before the buzzer, but both shots bounced off the rim.

Opening up the game, the Terriers took a 2-0 lead for the first basket of the game but the Raiders took the next five points with layups from Chandler and Abby Schubiger as well as a free throw from King. Schubiger and Graham hit layups later in the first period to extend the Raider lead to 9-5. The Terriers scored the next seven points to open a 12-9 lead at the start of the second quarter.

Neither team could distance itself in the second quarter with the Terriers taking as much as a seven-point lead but the Raiders clawed back within four at halftime.

Colgate hit right back to start the third quarter as they went on a 6-0 run after an early Boston University bucket to tie the game 28-28. Later in the quarter, Kateri Stone hit her first of two 3-pointers to bring Colgate within three and Koren hit a free throw with less than two seconds left to close the quarter trailing by four before the Raiders big fourth quarter rally.

From the Source
Head Coach Bill Cleary
On the Game Wednesday night
"We've had a great week. We did some team bonding things on Sunday that we felt carried over to practice and we saw it in the game today. The one thing we told our players is that it's not a Disney movie where it just all comes together at one moment and all our problems are solved."

"I'm proud of our players. They were very resilient tonight and they didn't quit. They played a full 45-minute game. They're crushed right now but we told them we're proud of them, they got better today and how we react to this game won't just determine the rest of the season but how the program goes."

"Kathy Brawn gave me some good advice yesterday and told me that if everyone can give an additional 10 percent moving forward, they'll be in good shape. All of our players today gave that additional 10 percent, and now they're going to give another extra 10 percent tomorrow and each day moving forward. As long as we keep doing that, we're going to keep getting better and that's the goal."

On Chelsey Koren
"Chelsey had a big game tonight, she wanted the ball in crucial situations and wasn't afraid to take control in those moments and make big-time shots. The sad part is, you look at our record right now and people think we're not getting better but the truth is that we are. Here's a kid that a year ago, she might not have taken those shots and she wanted those shots tonight. We're very proud of her."

On Summer King
"Summer has come such a long way. Again, it's being overshadowed by with what's going on but there is another young woman who has gotten so much better and is learning more and more about herself. She's learning that she can play, that she is productive and is one of the better bigs in this league. If you take a look at where she was a year ago and where she is now, she's made such great strides and we, as a staff, have not lost sight of that."
