Siena Holds Off Colgate Comeback

Late 7-0 Run Not Quite Enough in 55-53 Defeat

LOUDONVILLE, N.Y.Siena's Sabrina Piper scored 30 points and the host Saints withstood a late Colgate rally to claim a 55-53 decision here Thursday night.

The Raiders trailed 53-46 after Piper's two free throws with 2:09 remaining. But Colgate put together a 7-0 run that featured two Summer King layups sandwiched around a Haley Greer 3-pointer.

King's second layup came with a half-minute remaining, forcing a Siena timeout. The Saints worked the clock and then found Maddie Sims for a layup that she converted with 8 seconds remaining.

Colgate called timeout and advanced the ball into the front court. Just before the final buzzer, Greer was fouled and went to the line for two shots. But she missed her first attempt and then, attempting to miss the second on purpose for a possible tip play, Colgate was called for a lane violation.

The Raiders opened the game making six of their first 11 field goal attempts and led 17-12 at the end of the quarter. Colgate built its lead to as much as 24-14 on Abby Schubiger's jumper with 5:27 remaining before halftime.

But Siena rallied behind Piper, who scored the half's final seven points and pulled the Saints within 26-25 at the break.

Siena moved in front in the third stanza, taking a 40-36 advantage into the final period. Colgate scored just nine points in the second quarter and 10 in the third to lose control of the game.

The Saints built their lead to as much as seven points on two occasions, the last at 53-46 on Piper's 30th point.

King was the Colgate leader with 13 points and nine rebounds. Rachel Thompson played just over a minute in the first half, picking up two fouls in the opening 1:19. She finished with eight points while Greer scored 10.
