HAMILTON – James Holland Jr., pocketed his seventh Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week award Monday after his scintillating Saturday performance at Army.
Â
Holland rushed 18 times for a career-tying 166 yards and a touchdown in Colgate's 28-14 loss. It came against an Army team that Monday moved to No. 23 and 24 in the major college football polls – the Black Knights' first national ranking in 22 years.
Â
Holland averaged 9.2 yards per carry against that defense, keeping the Raiders in the game until the very end.
Â
With Saturday's performance, Holland not only eclipsed the 1,000-yard season mark but also the 3,000-yard barrier for his career. The senior tailback leads the Patriot League with 1,065 yards this year and is up to eighth on the Colgate career chart at 3,026.
Â
Saturday's showing also earned Holland STATS FCS National Offensive Player of the Week Honorable Mention. The Royal Palm Beach, Florida, native is up to 14th nationally in rushing at 106.5 after having combined for 681 yards over his last five games – a 136.2-yard average.
Â
Holland has won Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week honors either from the conference office or from College Sports Madness after seven of his 10 games played.
Â
Poll Position
The Raiders learned Sunday they are the No. 8 seed in the upcoming Division I Football Championship bracket.
Â
So it makes perfect sense, right, that Colgate stands seventh in the AFCA Coaches Poll and ninth in the STATS FCS media/SID poll to end the regular season.
Â
Colgate lost its first game of the season, 28-14, to a 9-2 Army team now ranked among the top 25 squads in the FBS ranks. And the Raiders were without their starting quarterback for a second straight game.
Â
Statistically Speaking
Despite Army rushing for 261 yards – most by a Colgate opponent this season – the Raiders still maintain a quality standing in the national statistical rankings.
Â
Colgate continues to lead the FCS in scoring defense (5.7), pass efficiency defense (82.02) and total defense (201.7). The Raiders are now second in red zone defense (50 percent) – Army was 4-of-4 – third in rushing defense (77.1), third in third down conversion defense (26.4 percent) – Army was 8-of-12 – and sixth in turnover margin (+1.2).
