Cosentino For The Win!

Colgate Nabs Navy in Double OT For Seventh Straight Win, Fifth Consecutive Shutout

ANNAPOLIS, Md.  – Mara Cosentino scored the game-winning goal with 1:23 left in double overtime to lift the Colgate women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Navy on Saturday in a showdown of the top two teams in the Patriot League.

Entrenched in a defensive battle for most of the contest, Cosentino came through in the clutch as the hero for the Raiders once again.

With Colgate pressuring in the final minutes, Ellis Miller struck a cross into the box. Cosentino battled off a defender and powered a shot inside the left post for the golden goal in the 109th minute.

Kelly Chiavaro was lights out once again, finishing with four saves for Colgate's fifth consecutive shutout. The Raiders stretched their unbeaten streak to 12 straight games in the process.

Chiavaro set the stage for the dramatic finish with the save of the game in the 86th minute. Baseley McClaskey created space on the right wing and struck a shot on target. Chiavaro jumped to knock the line drive out of mid-air at the last second with her left arm.

The Raiders defended three corner kicks in the final six minutes of regulation to keep the match scoreless headed for overtime.

Dom DeMarco earned the best chance in the first overtime. Emily Amano inserted a cross into the six-yard box and DeMarco redirected it with a header but it fired just over the crossbar as the two teams went into double overtime scoreless before Cosentino's game-winner.

It was a seesaw battle for the first 90 minutes. Victoria Tran had an early scoring opportunity for Navy after connecting on a one-timer in the 10th minute. Chiavaro got a hand on the header to chip it outside of the left post. Eleanor Pratt had another opportunity for the Mids but her header from the center of the box skipped wide.

Cosentino highlighted the Raiders' chances in the first half with a pair of point-blank shots. She blasted a shot just high from the stripe at the top of the box in the 22nd minute and later chipped a low shot just wide of the right post from 10 yards out in the 40th minute.

Sage DiGiulio inserted five corner kicks in the opening frame but the two squads went into the locker room scoreless at the half.

The Raiders carried their momentum over to the second half. In the 59th minute, Sydney Maxson beamed a set piece off the post after a Mids' foul set up a free kick from just outside the box.

With Colgate continuing to generate scoring chances, another Navy foul gave Ellis Miller a free kick from 20 yards out but her shot sailed just high as the two teams were scoreless after 90 minutes.

This was an incredible game. For Ellis [Miller] to have the energy and determination late in the second overtime, and to find Mara [Cosentino], who was so composed and clinical in the finish, was impressive to say the least.

We played some of our best soccer to date today against a strong Navy squad. Everyone contributed to this victory. Training leading up to this was outstanding. We will enjoy this for a bit, and then get refocused on the next one.
