ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Navy broke open a tight game with a 13-0 run midway in the second quarter and posted a 70-54 victory over Colgate here Monday night.
Colgate fought through some first-quarter foul trouble –
Nia Ahart,
Mackenzie Carroll and
Keelah Dixon all picked up two in the opening 7½ minutes – and led 13-12 on
Summer King's bucket with 2:17 showing.
But the Raiders went dry the rest of the period and trailed 15-13 at the end of one.
Haley Greer's 3-pointer gave the Raiders a 19-17 advantage with 8:20 left before halftime. But that was the final Colgate field goal of the half as Navy went on its 13-point run over a 2:50 span and rode that to a 40-26 lead at halftime.
Colgate kept it close by going 10-of-11 at the free throw line in the first half.
Navy then came out of the gate with three straight 3-pointers to begin the third quarter, opening a 49-30 lead that expanded to 52-32 midway in the period. Hannah Fenske's corner trey at the buzzer made it 59-40 Mids heading to the fourth.
Colgate outscored the home side 14-11 over the final 10 minutes thanks to five from Dixon and four from
Abby Schubiger. Navy's largest lead of the game was 70-49 before the Raiders scored the final five points.
Dixon sparkled offensively for Colgate with 12 points, more than doubling her previous season high in the scoring column. Schubiger also posted a season scoring best with eight, while King added 11 points and just missed a double-double with nine rebounds.

Head coach Bill Cleary (On
Keelah Dixon) "Sometimes with first-year players, it takes a while for them to figure it out and tonight she showed that she's figuring it out. That's what we saw when we were recruiting her. We love her grittiness and we love her aggressiveness, and she's a mentally tough kid. We're really excited that she had a breakthrough game today."
(On
Summer King and
Abby Schubiger) "Summer just has to realize the player that she is. She can be a great player in this league and we believe she is a great player in this league. Sometimes when you're learning a new role, it goes up and down. But she understands that her team needs her every night.
"Abby had a big second half for us. Those are her shots; she can make those short jumpers and I was happy with her production tonight."
(On the second quarter) "We did it to ourselves. Navy is well-coached but when you commit five turnovers in a row and they lead to 10 straight points, you're really shooting yourself in the foot. Whether it's the first quarter or the second quarter, there's one quarter we are struggling with and we have to be better. We keep telling our players we are not a bad team. We make bad decisions but we can get better and we need to focus our energy on beating Boston University."
