Loyola Records 70-55 Decision over Colgate

King Leads Raiders with 14 Points; Greyhounds Boosted by Triple-Double, Seven Treys

BALTIMORELoyola put together a record-breaking afternoon in posting a 70-55 decision over Colgate here Sunday.

Sophomore guard Stephanie Karcz compiled the first triple-double in Loyola program history and Alexis Gray drained seven 3-pointers to possibly match the all-time high by a Raiders opponent. Karcz finished with 14 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists, while Gray was 7-of-15 from beyond the arc to lead all scorers with 21 points.

Karcz scored seven points in each half and totaled six rebounds and six assists during the second half to reach her milestone figure. Gray's 3-point effort equals that of Lafayette's Linnel Macklin back on Jan. 29, 2014, in Hamilton.

Summer King scored the game's first two points but Loyola answered with nine straight, forcing a Raiders timeout. Mylah Chandler picked up two fouls during that opening 3-plus minute stretch.

Loyola put together a second 9-0 run to lead 22-6 before Haley Greer's 3-pointer ended the first quarter at 22-9 in favor of the Greyhounds.

After spotting Loyola two more baskets and falling behind 26-9 to begin the second stanza, Colgate rallied with 10 straight points. Mackenzie Carroll capped the run with a pair of corner 3-balls and the Raiders were within 26-19.

Colgate converted its last four field goal attempts of the half and trailed 36-27 at intermission.

The Raiders charged from the gate to begin the third quarter, and Chandler's two free throws just a minute in narrowed the Loyola lead to 37-31.

But a pair of Gray threes capped a 10-2 run that lifted the hosts to a 47-33 edge with 5:38 left in the period. Loyola pushed the lead to as many as 17 points and led 57-42 heading to the fourth.

Colgate put forth one final push, narrowing the lead to 61-52 on King's 3-point-play with 4:11 remaining. But first King and then Carroll fouled out in the next minute and Loyola finished out its second straight victory.

The Raiders were paced by King's 14 points and eight rebounds. Chandler equaled a season high with 10 points and added five boards, while Chelsey Koren scored seven points and handed out a career-high five assists.

From the Source
• Head coach Bill Cleary (On the game) "You couldn't ask for a better start to the second half. The players were excited and wanted to get things going. They started following the game plan very well and we got it down to six. Unfortunately, the turnover bug hit us again.

"I tip my cap to Loyola; they did a very nice job. Our players are battling and I'm proud of how hard they are going. They are still fighting and we are going to get this thing turned around this year. We are going to get back to the drawing board and figure out what we need to do to beat Army."

(On consistency) "Summer King, Chelsey Koren, Mylah Chandler and Nia Ahart – those four are really doing a great job of giving us consistent play. There's also no question that we've got some other kids who are going really hard, but we've got to add the execution part behind that effort."
