HAMILTON –
The Colgate men's soccer team out-shot Binghamton 25-10, but it was the Bearcats who came out on top of the scoreboard in a 2-1 decision at Beyer-Small '76 Field Monday night. Senior Karl Brown scored Colgate's goal in the 36th minute to erase an early 1-0 deficit, but the Bearcats tapped in the game winner in the 78th minute.

The Bearcats struck early when a Colgate foul was whistled right outside of the 18-yard box. Binghamton's Noah Luescher rifled the free kick into the far post to put the Bearcats up 1-0 in the sixth minute.

The Raiders answered by picking up the pressure with four shots and four corner kicks in a six-minute span, but it wasn't until the 36th minute when Colgate was able to even the score.

A corner kick from senior Jared Stroud found the head of junior Aram Ouligian who redirected the ball towards goal. Brown took it from there, finishing off the header into the right-side netting to knot the score at 1-1.

The Raiders had a few more chances to close out the half, but the teams carried the 1-1 draw into the locker room.

Colgate had a few good chances early on in the second half, including a shot from junior Freddy Jonsson that was cleared off the goal line by a Binghamton defender in the 54th minute. The Raiders had a plethora of opportunities, getting five corner kick opportunities and 11 shots within the first 30 minutes of the term.

The Bearcats had limited chances, but were able to capitalize on a free kick in the 78th minute. The kick from Luescher was bobbled around in the box until Chris Stamper got a foot on it and sent it into the back of the net to give the Bearcats a 2-1 advantage.

Brown nearly evened it up once again with another header off a free kick in the 88th minute, but Binghamton keeper Alejandro Cubillo was there to make the stop. A header from Abdel Sanogo followed suit in the final seconds, but Cubillo was there once again to secure the 2-1 Binghamton victory.

FROM THE SOURCE
Head Coach Erik Ronning
  • "There was a lot of improvement and progress made from the first game to this game. We're at game two of 18 and while the results haven't gone our way, I see us making steps forward every time."
  • "I thought we played very well in certain areas tonight. We kept the ball, we controlled tempo, we created a tremendous amount of goal scoring opportunities and defended well through the run of play. The difference in the game was that we weren't able to finish our opportunities, and we have to do a better job of defending on set piece chances."
  • "I was very proud of the guys for the way we played throughout and the improvement that was made. We played from behind twice and kept battling and creating opportunities. If we're able to finish better then I think we have the chance to be pretty good."
  • "We're getting closer. It wasn't perfect, but we're getting closer. We have to recover now and get ready for a tough Big Ten team in Northwestern to come in here Friday night."
