Raiders Drop Series Opener On Rain-Shortened Saturday

Lehigh Takes Game 1 9-4; Teams Will Resume Game Two in Second Inning Sunday

HAMILTON – The Colgate softball team dropped a 9-4 series opener to Patriot League regular-season champion Lehigh Saturday in a rain-shortened day at Eaton Street Field. The Raiders held a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second of the day's nightcap, but rained forced the suspension of the contest. The game will resume Sunday at 11 a.m. from its current position.

After a scoreless first inning, the Raiders look a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second of the series opener. Senior Tara Grennan and first-year Sabrina Odierno knocked back-to-back one-out singles before senior Katie Bushee stepped up with a two-out RBI base knock to center.

Lehigh answered right away in the top of the third as Mary-Hannah Smith sent a two-run home run over the center field fence to give the Mountain Hawks a 2-1 advantage.

Following a scoreless third frame, the game went into a 40-minute rain delay in the top of the fourth inning. The game resumed and the Mountain Hawks loaded the bases with one out in the top of the frame before the teams headed back out to the dugout for another 45-minute delay, this time due to lightning in the area.

Once play resumed, the Mountain Hawks two walks and two hits to plate four runs and extend their lead to 6-1.

First-year Jordan Miller smacked her sixth home run of the season to open up the bottom of the fourth and pull Colgate within 6-2.

Lehigh answered with three runs on hits in the top of the sixth to run its lead to 9-2. Millers second dinger of the day came in the bottom of the frame as her two-run shot to left drove home sophomore Lauren La Terra to pull the Raiders within 9-4.

The Raiders held a 2-0 in the bottom of the second inning of the scheduled nightcap before the contest was called short due to rain.  La Terra smacked a solo home run in the first before Bushee was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to plate Colgate's runs. The Raiders will have the bases loaded with two outs when play resumes Sunday.
