Strong Team Effort Leads Colgate Past Syracuse 3-2 in DH Split

First-year Pitcher Brittany Bendel Helps Quiet Orange Bats

HAMILTON – First-year Brittany Bendel threw one of the best games of her career to help Colgate to a 3-2 victory over ACC-foe Syracuse in the nightcap of a Wednesday non-league doubleheader at Eaton Street Field. The strong pitching performance and key defensive plays quieted the Syracuse bats that had led the Orange to a 10-0 win in the day's opener.

Bendel struck out a career-high six batters and limited the Orange to two runs on nine hits. The Raiders put together a three-run fourth inning to pull in front with the help of RBIs from first-year Jordan Miller and senior Tara Grennan.

The win marks Colgate's second victory over a team from a Power 5 conference this season. The Raiders beat the Big Ten's Rutgers 5-4 on March 15 in 29846Clearwater, Fla.

Bendel kept Syracuse scoreless for the first two frames until the Orange loaded the bases in the third and used an RBI hit by pitch to take a 1-0 lead.

Colgate was finally able to get its bats going in the fourth inning. First-year Virginia Irby recorded the Raiders' first hit of the game to open the frame before classmate Nicole Rounsavill laid down a bunt that the Syracuse catcher misplayed. Junior Holly Geranen followed with a bunt single that was coupled with another Orange error to allow Irby to score and knot the game at 1-1. Grennan then smacked an RBI groundout before Miller added an RBI base hit to give Colgate a 3-1 lead through four frames.

Bendel kept the Orange off-balance until a two-out solo shot from Olivia Martinez cut Colgate's lead to 3-2 in the top of the sixth. Colgate wasn't able to add any insurance in the bottom of the frame, but Bendel used some defensive help to take care of business in the top of the seventh.

After a leadoff single and a walk, sophomore Meghan Romero turned a fantastic double play to put two outs on the board. Bendel then got the final Syracuse batter to fly out to left field to secure the 3-2 Colgate victory.

The Orange took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning of the day's opener as the nation's leading hitter Sydney O'Hara smacked a two-run home run over the left field fence. Syracuse added two more runs in the third on a solo home run and RBI double, but Colgate senior starting pitcher Gillian Murray got the Orange to line into a double play and strikeout to keep the Cuse lead at 4-0.29847

Irby got Colgate's first hit of the opener in the bottom of the fourth inning, but the Raiders weren't able to get much else off Syracuse pitcher Alexa Romero through the first few frames. Syracuse then broke the game open in the fifth as the Orange used six hits to plate six runs and extend their lead to 10-0. Colgate put two runners on base in the bottom of the fifth as sophomore Baillie Jorth drew a walk and Murray laced a single, but Romero got a strikeout to end the game and secure the 10-0 Orange victory.

FROM THE SOURCE
Head Coach Melissa Finley
  • "It was great to see the team bounce back from a disappointing first game to compete in the second game. We have to find a way to compete like that every time we take the field and not wait until the second game of a series."
  • "I thought Brittany threw a masterful game and did a great job keeping them off balance. Virginia did a great job calling pitches and throwing out baserunners."
  • "Our defensive side of the game has continued to improve and we found a way to generate runs when our offense wasn't as productive as we would like it to be. I'm proud of the way the team played for one another and found a way to win."

UP NEXT
  • The Raiders hit the road this weekend to take on Boston University in a three-game Patriot League series.
  • A Saturday doubleheader will begin at noon, while Sunday's single game is also slated for a 12 p.m. start.
