CLEARWATER, Fla. – The Colgate softball team scored the program's most runs in a single game in 19 years Sunday morning when the Raiders picked up an impressive 18-2 win over Yale in the final contest of a 12-game Spring Break trip.
Colgate scored its most runs in a single game since a 19-run effort in a 19-0 win over Stony Brook in 1998. The 16-run win marks Colgate's largest margin of victory since a 17-0 decision over Coppin State in 2000.
Eight different Raiders knocked in runs in the full-team effort. Junior
Holly Geranen and first-year
Sabrina Odierno led the team with four RBI apiece. Junior pitcher
Kyle Griswold earned the win in the circle.
The Raiders got on the board right away as first-year
Virginia Irby and sophomore
Lauren La Terra got on base with one out. Geranen then sent her second home run of the season to dead center field to give the Raiders a 3-0 lead in the top of the first.
Senior
Katie Bushee added onto her career triples record with another triple in the top of the second before the speedy outfielder scored on a wild pitch to work Colgate's lead to 4-0.
Colgate put up a five spot in the third inning to build its advantage to 9-0. Geranen got the inning started with a one-out double before back-to-back walks followed. Sophomore
Pami White was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Odierno followed with a two-run base hit. Sophomore
Baillie Jorth added a two-run single up the middle to cap off the frame as the Raiders took their 9-0 lead to the bottom of the third.
The Raiders then used eight hits and a Yale error to plate nine runs in the top of the fifth. Sophomore
Meghan Romero, Bushee, Irby, junior
Alicia Daly and White all recorded RBI in the big inning as Colgate pulled ahead 18-0.
The Bulldogs plated a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the fifth, but it wasn't nearly enough as the Raiders picked up the 18-2 victory.
