WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Colgate volleyball team wasn't able to overcome early deficits in a 3-0 loss at Army West Point Friday night.
Army jumped out to a quick 7-1 lead in the first set. The Raiders had trouble recovering as the Black Knights eventually stretched their lead to 19-10. The Raiders fought off set point twice, but Army took the opening set 25-14 to take a 1-0 match lead.
The second set started much like the first as Army held an early 11-3 lead, but this time the Raiders were able to claw back. A kill from first-year
Alli Lowe sparked a 9-3 Raider run that brought Colgate back within two at 14-12. The Black Knights answered right back with six-straight points to stretch their lead to eight. Three kills from junior
Jaelah Hutchison helped Colgate pull back within six, but it would be as close as the Raiders would get as Army took the second set 25-16.
A 6-0 Army lead forced an early Colgate timeout in the third set. The Raiders were able to narrow the Black Knight advantage to two at 10-8 following a pair of service aces from junior
Peighton McRobie. Army retaliated with eight of the next 10 points to extend its lead to 18-10. Colgate wouldn't go quietly, however, as the Raiders strung together a 6-0 run to pull back within two and force an Army timeout. A Hutchison block had the Raiders within one at 21-20, but the Black Knights held on to take the set 25-22 and earn a 3-0 match win.
