Holy Cross Stuns Colgate in Overtime

DePetro, Ouligian and Stroud Score for Raiders

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Colgate men's soccer team took a 3-2 lead in the 83rd minute at Holy Cross, but the Crusaders scored in the final minute to force overtime before slotting home the game winner on a free kick to hand the Raiders a heartbreaking 4-3 overtime loss Wednesday night.

First-year Chris DePetro scored his first career goal before junior Aram Ouligian followed to give the Raiders an early 2-0 lead. Holy Cross battled to tie the score at 2-2 before senior Jared Stroud converted a penalty kick in the 83rd minute. Holy Cross scored with 1:02 left in regulation before finding the golden goal in overtime.

Neither team registered a shot until DePetro scored on the first attempt of the game. The Crusaders turned the ball over at the top of the box and DePetro quickly corralled the ball and buried it into the far post to give the Raiders a 1-0 lead in the 16th minute with his first-career tally.

Colgate out-shot the Crusaders 4-0 over the next 15 minutes before the Raiders doubled their lead in the 33rd minute. Ouligian headed in a corner kick from sophomore Kentaro Morrison to add the insurance tally and net his fifth goal of the season.

The Crusaders were able to get one back on their first shot of the game as Arno Rupp scored on a corner kick in the 38th minute to pull Holy Cross within 2-1. Holy Cross rattled off one more shot in the term, but the Raiders were able to take their 2-1 lead into halftime.

Holy Cross evened the game in the 68th minute off another corner kick. This time it was Ed Mujan who headed in the corner to knot the score at 2-2.

Colgate senior keeper Peter Tappenden made a key diving save in the 79th minute to keep the score tied. Holy Cross keeper Henry Stutz followed suit with two saves, but Crusader defender Justin Carfora was whistled for a hand ball on a goal-line stop to set the Raiders up with a penalty kick chance.

Stroud stepped up and converted the PK to give the Raiders a 3-2 lead with just over eight minutes left on the clock.

The Crusaders wouldn't go quietly, however, as Holy Cross found the game-tying goal with just 1:02 left in regulation to send the game to overtime knotted at 3-3.

The Raiders had two solid chances in the opening minutes of overtime, but a Colgate foul led to a Holy Cross free kick at the top of the box in the 96th minute. The Raiders lined up a slew of players in a defensive wall, but Rupp curved the ball around the wall and into the goal to lift the Crusaders to the 4-3 overtime victory.
