Navy Pulls Away for 80-67 Victory Over Colgate

Stone Leads Raiders With 19 Points

HAMILTON – The Colgate women's basketball team was within two of Navy with seven minutes to play, but the Mids rattled off an 18-2 run to pull away for an 80-67 win Sunday afternoon at Cotterell Court.

Junior Kateri Stone led the Raiders with 19 points. Senior Katie Curtis, sophomore Mylah Chandler and first-year Rachel Thompson all chipped in nine points apiece.

The Mids raced out to an early 13-4 lead with the help of 10 points from Taylor Dunham to force a Colgate timeout at the 5:41 mark of the first quarter. A three-pointer from Stone snapped Navy's 7-0 run at 5:02. The trey sparked a 10-4 quarter-closing streak that saw five points from Thompson and cut the Navy lead down to 17-14.

The Mids opened the second quarter on an 8-0 run to stretch their advantage to 25-14.  The Raiders answered with an 8-0 run of their own as five points from Stone and a Curtis three-pointer had Colgate back within three at 25-22 with 4:52 on the clock. The Raiders were within two a minute later following a trey from sophomore Chelsey Koren, but the Mids wrapped up the second quarter on a 7-2 streak to take a 34-27 lead into halftime.

Navy stretched its lead to double-digits at 42-31 less than three minutes into the second half. The Mids were still ahead by 11 at 49-38 at the under-five media timeout, but a Stone layup and conventional three-point play from Chandler brought Colgate within six with 4:03 on the clock.  Navy scored nine of the next 10 points to go up 58-44 with just under two minutes left in the term. A Stone three-pointer halted the Midshipmen run and sparked a 7-0 quarter-closing run for the Raiders to pull Colgate within 58-51 heading into the final stanza.

Four Colgate layups comprised an 8-3 run to open the fourth quarter as the Raiders all of the sudden found themselves within 61-59 with 7:04 to play. The Mids then answered with an 18-2 run over the next four minutes to put the Raiders in a hole they wouldn't be able to climb out of. Colgate scored six of the game's final eight points, but it was too little, too late as Navy earned the 80-67 win.

FROM THE SOURCE
Head Coach Bill Cleary
  • "We were undisciplined towards the end of the game. Navy was more disciplined and made the right shots and the right plays. Our kids play hard and they're doing everything we're asking them to do. We just need to do a better job in certain areas."
  • "Kateri is showing everybody what she can do. She, in my opinion, is a very special player. I think she is starting to see for herself that she is that type of player. I've enjoyed watching her grow right in front of us."
