Colgate drops league opener at preseason favorite American

Eagles use a penalty kick and two second-half goals to down Raiders

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Colgate men's soccer team wasn't able to get much going Saturday afternoon at preseason favorite American as the Raiders fell 3-0 in the teams' Patriot League opener.

The teams exchanged possession throughout the opening 15 minutes until American got off the game's first shot in the 16th minute, but Colgate senior keeper Ricky Brown was there to make the diving save. Sophomore Uyi Omorogbe was credited with Colgate's first opportunity in the 19th minute as American netminder Lucas Belanger stepped up to make the stop.

The Raiders controlled much of the momentum in the opening term until American's Joe Iraola was awarded a penalty kick in the 32nd minute. Iraola buried the ball into the lower left-hand corner to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead they would take into halftime despite Colgate threatening with three shots and a corner kick.

American added an insurance tally just under 15 minutes into the second frame when a corner kick led to Jake Garcia connecting on a deflected ball to put the Eagles ahead 2-0 in the 60th minute.

Colgate rattled off six shots in the next 15 minutes, four of which came off the foot of senior Ethan Kutler, but none could find the back of the net. Iraola then netted his second goal of the game in the 74th minute to put American ahead 3-0. Brown made a few big saves down the stretch, but Colgate wasn't able to rally as the Eagles walked away with a 3-0 victory.

  • "Regardless of the score, our guys never stopped working, pushing, and trying to get back into the game. We had a couple chances to do so, but it was not meant to be."
  • "I am confident that we will become a strong team as a result of this experience."
