FULLERTON, CALIF. – Colgate fell to Cal State Fullerton after a tough five set battle, losing the match 3-2 (22-25, 25-23, 27-25, 12-25, 15-13).
The Raiders claimed the first set from Cal State Fullerton 25-22. Colgate never trailed after tying the game at seven and used a 4-0 and a 3-0 run to secure the win. The early 4-0 run to give the Raiders a 14-10 lead was led by back-to-back kills from
Jaelah Hutchison, while the late 3-0 spurt was sparked by back-to-back service aces by
Lauren Sanderson.
Kathleen Harris led the Raiders with four kills in the frame and Hutchison pitched in three.
Colgate held the lead for the majority of the second set, but CSF used a 9-3 run to win the second set 25-23.
Katie Stansbury and
Taylor Flaherty recorded back-to-back kills to keep Colgate in the set late, but the Raiders could not hold on to take the frame. Hutchison and Harris both pitched in three kills for the set.
The Raiders and the Titans were engaged in a back-and-forth battle for the entirety of the third set, but ultimately the Titans were able to claim the frame 27-25. CSF took its first lead of the set at 16-15 and would continue its run to take an 18-16 lead over Colgate. The Raiders fought back with a 5-0 run of their own bolstered by a Harris kill and a service ace by
Corrina Moncada. Colgate used a timeout after a 3-0 CSF run and came out of the break with a kill a piece by Stebbins and Harris. The Raiders could not hold on to their 25-24 lead though and the Titans used a 3-0 run to close out the set.
Colgate dominated all of the momentum in the fourth set, taking the frame 25-12. The Raiders took the early 12-3 lead, assisted by three kills from Stansbury and back-to-back service aces by
Molly Smith.
Michala Jepson and Stansbury each registered a kill late in the set to give Colgate a 24-12 lead. Sanderson, Hutchison and
Gabby Benck ended the frame on a high note with a huge block at the end to ensure the fifth set.
For the second time today, Colgate battled to the end in the fifth set, but would come up just short. The Raiders fell to Cal State Fullerton by just two points, dropping the frame 15-13. The Raiders fought back to take a 11-10 lead over the Titans, but were not able to hang on to defeat CSF.
Harris and
Madison McAndrews were chosen as members of the All-Tournament team for their performance over the weekend.
