BATON ROUGE, La. – Colgate's storied program is no stranger to milestone women's soccer victories, but Sunday's 2-1 win at LSU marked the first against a Southeastern Conference opponent.
The Raiders answered an LSU second-half penalty kick with
Abby Sotomayor's 74th-minute goal that was the difference in the huge road triumph.
Eliza Doll scored Colgate's opening tally in the 39th minute, while first-year keeper
Kelly Chiavaro made seven big saves in goal.
LSU gained control early with four free kicks and a pair of shots in the opening 10 minutes, but the Raiders quickly made their way downfield and got off back-to-back corner kicks in the 12th minute. Chiavaro was forced to make her first save of the contest in the 20th minute when she stopped a shot from LSU's Delaney Sheehan.
Following another save from Chiavaro in the 24th minute, the Raiders tallied their first shot of the game. A long-range chance from senior
Sarah Coy in the 26th minute flew right into the hands of LSU keeper Caroline Brockmeier.
Colgate kept LSU at bay despite a number of Tiger chances before the Raiders got on the board in the 39th minute. Doll buried a free kick from the edge of the 18-yard box inside the right post to give Colgate a 1-0 lead that held into halftime.
LSU knotted the score at 1-1 in the 67th minute when Jorian Baucom converted a penalty kick opportunity. The Raiders jumped right back in front seven minutes later when
Ginny Whitman sent a centering pass to Sotomayor about six yards out.
Sotomayor was able to sneak the ball past the LSU keeper and put Colgate back in front 2-1 in the 74th minute. The first-year forward has scored twice in her first three collegiate games.
