HAMILTON – The Colgate men's soccer team secured its second shutout in as many games Sunday afternoon as the Raiders picked up a 2-0 victory over UMass at Beyer-Small '76 Field.
Senior
Ethan Kutler scored his second game-winning goal of the young season to break a scoreless draw in the 64th minute, while first-year
Kentaro Morrison added an insurance tally just over a minute later.
The Raiders controlled possession right from the start, forcing UMass keeper Jorge Becerra to make five saves within the first 20 minutes of action. A header from senior
Zach Tamen provided the first opportunity, while Kutler was able to use a nifty move to work his way through the Minutemen defense, but all of the Raiders' shots flew into the hands of Becerra.
Colgate keeper
Ricky Brown made his first stop in the 28th minute on UMass' first shot of the game. Brown was forced to make one more save in the period as Colgate continued to pressure the Minutemen back line. Attempts from juniors
Chase Pagani and
Karl Brown added two more shots on goal in the final five minutes of the term, but Becerra was there once again as the teams took a scoreless draw into halftime.
Colgate picked up where it left off in the second half, controlling the ball in the Raiders' offensive third for much of the opening 20 minutes. Colgate was finally able to convert in the 64th minute when Kutler connected on a pass from junior
Jared Stroud and buried it into the far post over the head of Becerra to put the Raiders ahead 1-0.
Just over a minute later, Morrison added an insurance tally when he bent a ball into the upper right-hand corner of the net as Colgate quickly took a 2-0 lead. The Raiders didn't give up a shot the rest of the way as Colgate was able to secure the 2-0 victory. Kutler, Tamen and
Colin O'Neill were named to the CNY Classic All-Tournament Team.

FROM THE SOURCE
Head Coach Erik Ronning
- "To get two wins on an opening weekend, not give up a goal and get a lot of players involved is an incredibly positive start to the season. I was very pleased with our overall maturity level and not getting frustrated when things weren't happening how we would've liked. We responded really well in adverse moments."
- "UMass is tough to play against and is a high-pressure team, but we locked it down pretty well against them. We were able to make a couple big plays at the end and managed the game really well in the last 15 minutes."
- "There were some great moments of quality soccer and some terrific moments defensively, but we still have a long way to go. We have a great group of guys that are working incredibly hard and haven't come close to hitting their ceiling yet. It's a driven, experienced group and we have good leadership and temperament. It was a terrific weekend overall and the guys are getting better every game, which is all we hope for."
