HAMILTON – The Colgate women's soccer team christened Beyer-Small '76 Field for the 2015 fall season when it hosted ACC foe Boston College here Sunday afternoon.
Ultimately, the Raiders dropped a 3-0 decision to their guests but not without a fight.
The game was scoreless for 71 minutes, as both teams had quality chances on net. Colgate nearly broke the tie midway through the first half when senior
Jenna Panepinto ripped a shot from 30-yards out that tested BC's goalie Alexis Bryant. Her attempt dipped quickly and looked as if it would slide in under the crossbar but Bryant was able to just get a touch on it to push it up and over the net.
The Eagles ended up breaking the deadlock, however, when Colgate was called for a foul inside the box. BC's Hayley Dowd converted on the penalty kick, giving the Eagles the 1-0 edge.
Colgate responded strong and created two great chances of its own when senior
Jenna Raepple stole the ball in BC's defensive end and dribbled down the left side of the field. From the endline she made a beautiful cross to the backside of the goal but
Sarah Coy was unable to finish it off as it was just out of her reach.
A few minutes later
Catherine Williams sparked a great Raider chance when she used her speed to blow past the last Eagles defender. With the ball bouncing she was able to get a small touch on it, looking to push it around the goalie, but Bryant came off her line to make a great diving save.
In the 81st minute BC added a second goal and then a third less than four minutes later to ultimately secure the victory.
Erin Cummings got the start in net for Colgate making four saves, including a point-blank attempt from BC's Gaby Carreiro just outside the six-yard box, which kept the game scoreless.
Colgate returns to action next Friday and Sunday when it travels to Syracuse for a tournament. The Raiders will face Albany on Friday at 4 p.m. followed by a contest with St. John's on Sunday at 11:30 a.m.
