Raiders Take Army to Overtime

Second-Seeded Knights Prevail 48-45 in Another Close Encounter; Team Breaks Season Free-Throw Mark

WEST POINT, N.Y. – Three games. Six points.

Army rallied for a 48-45 overtime victory over Colgate here Friday in the Patriot League Tournament Quarterfinals. The Black Knights went 3-0 against the Raiders this season, and the combined winning point-total was six points.

Tonight's three-point gap was the widest margin of the bunch.

Colgate overcame a nine-point halftime deficit to lead 38-32 when Randyll Butler connected on a jumper with 4:50 remaining in regulation. But Army held the Raiders scoreless the rest of the way and sent the game into overtime on Aimee Oertner's putback with 2.3 seconds left.

Missy Repoli nailed a 3-pointer for Colgate to begin the extra period, but Army stayed close and the teams traded the lead three more times with two ties.

Oertner was the difference in overtime as well, scoring seven of Army's 10 points including the deciding layup with 38 seconds left that put the Knights up 47-45.

Colgate had a chance to tie on the other end but missed a layup with 14 seconds remaining. Army's Kelsey Minato made one of two free throws for a three-point cushion, and then Colgate never was able to get off an uncontested 3-pointer as time expired.

Josie Stockill led the Raiders with 12 points, including four in overtime. She made both ends of a 1-and-1 with 1:59 left that gave Colgate its last lead of the game at 45-44.

Butler and Carole Harris scored eight points apiece, and Mariah Jones added seven.

Army led 22-13 at halftime only to see Colgate open the second period on a 12-3 run. The Raiders got back into it by holding the Knights without a field goal until 9:47 was left in regulation.

It marked the second straight opponent Colgate had held without a field goal for more than 10 minutes to start the second half.

Army (23-6) received 14 points from Minato and 12 from Oertner.

Two road teams won in Friday's quarterfinal round, and Colgate was seconds away from making it a trio. Second-seeded Army hosts No. 6 Lehigh on Monday in the Patriot League Tournament semifinals, while top-seeded American hosts No. 5 Navy in the other matchup.

Colgate's season concludes at 9-22. The Raiders won their last three Patriot League games to finish with their most conference wins (7-11) since the 2003-04 championship team went 10-4. And Colgate this year sported its best conference winning percentage (.389) since the 2005-06 squad went 6-8 (.429).

From the Sources
• Colgate head coach Nicci Hays Fort (On the game) "I love Dave Magarity (Army head coach). He's done a great job and I hope they win the whole thing now.
"They just made really tough plays down the stretch. When we got a lead, we knew it wasn't going to be safe. They did what they had to do to make baskets.
"They started off really strong and physical with us in the first half, and that really took us out of our game. I'm really proud of our team because we challenged them at halftime to be physical, be tough and be focused – and they did. We said we can't back down and we have to keep attacking.
"They went out and got us the lead, but unfortunately we weren't able to hold on to it."
(On the end of regulation) "We did everything we were supposed to do on that last possession except for, obviously, getting the rebound. These student-athletes did a fantastic job on Kelsey Minato. People in the Patriot League understand how hard it is to guard that kid. We just never wanted to let her be by herself, and she wasn't. She made three baskets.
18951
Butler matched her career high with six assists.

"We wanted to make someone else make a shot. We were not going to let Kelsey Minato make another shot on us, because she made the last two shots to beat us this year.
"It was a scrum. It was a scrum and (Aimee) Oertner's the one who got the ball and laid it back in. And in the overtime, she's the one who got a driving left-hand layup. She came up huge down the stretch, but our team did a great job with the game plan on that last possession of regulation."
• Colgate forward Josie Stockill (On Army's comeback) "We went on a run and got the lead, but then we had a couple of lapses and gave up a few crucial rebounds. They just managed to get back into it."
(On her big second half) "I was really challenged by the team and by Coach at halftime to step it up. I just wanted to contribute to the team and be more physical, and match Army's physical play."
• Colgate guard Mariah Jones (On the game) "That was my last college basketball game, so I'm not feeling too great right now. But we really did have a valiant effort. The entire team contributed and we can build on that for future years."
(On playing Army so closely) "We always love playing Army. We know it's going to be a close game. They're really physical, and we like playing physical teams. We know we can exploit that as well if they try to do too much.
"They got the better hand this time, but we have a good history with them – especially in the last couple of years being able to pull out close ones. We fight really hard, and that's our M.O."
