HAMILTON – Colgate announced the addition of 16 football student-athletes Wednesday as part of National Signing Day.
Â
Wednesday's festivities are just the start of the national signing period, and Colgate expects to announce more names to this roster of newcomers soon.
Â
Raiders head coach
Dan Hunt was pleased that his staff was able to pinpoint and sign skill-position student-athletes.
Â
"The last two seasons, we put a lot of scholarships and energy into the offensive and defensive lines, and they've panned out," Hunt said. "We've got some good linemen on both sides of the ball.
Â
"We felt this year we could go a bit lighter there and concentrate more on the skill positions."
Â
Hunt said the staff also searched for multi-faceted individuals.
Â
"Another thing you will see with this class is there are a lot of kids on it who in high school played multiple positions. We think when they get here they also should be able to play multiple positions."
Â
The signees announced Wednesday are from seven states. There are four each from Pennsylvania and Florida, three from the Chicagoland area and two from Massachusetts. One of those Bay Staters,
Chris Cervizzi, played the last two seasons at the Brooks School in the Boston suburb of North Andover for former Raiders assistant coach Pat Foley.
Â
One signee each is from Texas, Ohio and New Jersey.
Â
"It's definitely the end of a long process," Hunt said. "Our relationship with most of these kids started probably around this time last year. And then through spring evaluations and camp season and getting to see them during the season – it's a long arduous process.
Â
"The assistant coaches have done a great job; they really make it easy on me. They scoured the country for this class and we're really happy with it. But it's definitely the end of a long road for sure."
