Raider Block Party!

Colgate Opens Patriot League Play with 72-59 Win at Lafayette; Stockill Shatters Team, Career Block Marks

EASTON, Pa. – It was the Josie Stockill Show here Tuesday night as the senior forward led Colgate to a 72-59 road victory over Lafayette in the Patriot League opener.

Stockill finished with 27 points and 13 blocks, both career-bests. Her first two blocks were particularly special as it gave the senior the program's all-time leading blocks title. She now has 182 career blocks to her name.

Her 13 total blocks in the game were also significant as it broke the program's record for blocks in game. The Napier, New Zealand, native was just three shy of matching the NCAA's all-time record for blocks in a game.

Her game total was the Division I high for the season by three blocks.

Stockill wasn't the only Raider to have a stellar performance as senior Randyll Butler recorded her second double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Paige Kriftcher and Katie Curtis closed out the top Colgate scorers with 16 and 11 points, respectively.

The Raiders outscored their hosts in three of the four periods, missing a sweep by just the third period at 15-12.

A lot of that had to do with the quick start Colgate posted to begin the contest. Nicci Hays Fort's team jumped out to a 4-0 edge early, forcing Lafayette to call a timeout.

After a basket from the Leopards cut the lead in half, four more points from the Raiders handed them an 8-2 advantage just four minutes in.

Colgate closed out that period with its best first quarter of the year, outscoring the Leopards 19-14.

Lafayette would get the lead down to 21-20 with 5:35 remaining in the second period, but that would be as close as they would come.

22242Eight straight from Colgate pushed the Raider edge back to 29-20 and they never looked back.

The Raiders finished the night shooting 41.7 percent from the floor, despite hitting just 1-of-17 from long range. They did convert on 11 of their 17 attempts from the free throw line.

With the win, Colgate moves to 1-0 in the Patriot League for the first time since the 2003-04 season when the Raiders also defeated Lafayette 80-74 on the road. Colgate went on to win the conference title that year after finishing with a 10-4 mark in the league.

Colgate next welcomes Siena after the holiday break, Monday at 5 p.m. on Cotterell Court. Livestream will be available via the Patriot League Network.

Bottom Line
• Colgate 72, Lafayette 59
• It was the Raiders' second-highest scoring night of the year.

Won-Lost Records
• Colgate jumps to 1-0 in the Patriot League and 2-8 overall.
• Lafayette dips to 0-1 and 2-7.

How It Happened
• Colgate started the game strong and, besides a little hiccup in the second period, controlled much of the contest.
• The Raiders outscored their hosts in three of the four periods. They missed sweeping all four by just three points in the third. The quarters finished like this: 1st – 19-14; 2nd – 14-10; 3rd – 12-15; and 4th – 27-20.
• Colgate jumped on the Leopards early and created a 4-0 gap between the teams one minute in.
• With two minutes remaining in that quarter, the Raiders had extended their edge to 17-6 and then finished the period with the 19-14 lead. It was their best opening quarter this season.
• Lafayette would get the advantage down to one on two different occasions in the second period but never could get over that hump. The Leopards never led in the game. The last time the Leopards cut the lead down to 21-20, the Raiders rattled off eight straight to push their edge back to a comfortable margin.
22243• Colgate held the nine-point lead at the break, 33-24.
• Again the Leopards tried to rally in the third quarter, getting the deficit down to three, twice, but each time Hays Fort's squad had the answer.
• The Raiders extended their lead to double-digits early in the fourth and never really looked back. The game's final score of 72-59 was Colgate's largest lead of the contest and, ironically, was the best margin a Raider fan could ask for – Lucky No. 13.

From the Source
• Colgate head coach Nicci Hays Fort (On the game): "The team did a great job of staying committed to the game plan. We just played fearless and we had a really high level of energy the whole 40 minutes. That's been a little bit of a problem for us as we've been having some letdowns. We didn't tonight. We had great energy. If Lafayette tried to make a run, we would take back control of the game. And that's what we've been trying to do all year. We finally did it."

"I'm really proud of the team. It was a complete team effort. Everyone did some really great things."

(On not letting up after Lafayette had cut the lead down to one) "We just said that we really wanted to maintain our composure and play through everything. I thought we did a really great job of that. They cut it, but they never took the lead. We kind of took a little bit of some crazy shots during that stretch but we said 'Look, let's take good shots right now.' We ended up taking better shots, getting some stops and we got the lead back up to where we wanted it."

22244(On Josie Stockill's performance) "Josie – wow – she played a great, phenomenal game. We couldn't take her out. She had 13 blocks and 27 points. I'm just so proud of her and her teammates for celebrating her success with her. She broke the career blocked shots record but she also shattered the single-game record. We needed every one of those points and every one of those blocked shots tonight. The only reason she didn't get a triple-double is because she was too busy blocking the shots. Everyone else was grabbing the rebounds. She just had a great game overall and I'm just happy for her teammates too."

(On the win being a complete team effort) "Randyll got some huge rebounds and that's going back to what we need her to do. She added three assists, some blocks and some steals. When you can look on a stats sheet and have four people in double-figure that's a great game. So we're really happy with that. And even though our bench didn't have a lot of points, they did a lot of really positive things. Mylah Chandler came in and got a bunch of rebounds. Again, we just did a lot of really good things as a team."

(On using this as momentum heading into the remainder of Patriot League play) "The Patriot League is a season. We had the most difficult schedule in the Patriot League. We played the No. 1 team in the country, we played the No. 15 team in the country, Gonzaga is going to be ranked here soon, St. Bonaventure should be ranked. So we played a really hard non-conference schedule. We keep telling our team to stay positive and to think about the big picture. And that big picture is the Patriot League."

• Colgate Senior Forward Josie Stockill (On the game): "We had a really good practice, our best one of the season, yesterday and then this morning we had a really good shoot-around. Everyone was on the same page. We had a lot of energy, so we just carried that through into the game. The bench gave us a lot of energy on the court and the team just gelled really well. We definitely had fun out there."

(On what is was like to break two program records in the game): "It feels awesome. It's something I've been working toward in the second half of my career when I realized that I might be able to get it. I was inching closer and to now finally get there it's just a relief."

(On also adding a career-high 27 points): "My teammates did a really good job of getting me the ball. Our offense was working really well today. Lafayette put up a really good fight. They played well too."
