Raiders Earn 5th Seed in PL Tournament

Colgate Shifts into Postseason with 1-0 Victory; Williams Nets Game-Winner

HAMILTON – Colgate women's soccer used a 1-0 victory over Lafayette here Saturday to secure the fifth spot in the Patriot League tournament.

The Raiders will travel down to Baltimore, Maryland, on Tuesday for a match with Loyola in the conference quarterfinals. The Greyhounds won the teams' regular season meeting 3-2. Game time is tentatively scheduled for 7 p.m.

It was only fitting that Catherine Williams, who was one of nine acknowledged pregame for playing in their last game on Beyer-Small '76 Field, notched the eventual game-winner on Saturday in the 12th minute. Jenna Raepple was credited with the initial shot but her attempt was saved by Lafayette's Danielle Sedillo. Fortunately for the Raiders, the ball dropped right at the foot of Williams, who finished it home for the game's only goal.

Colgate jumped out early firing three good shots on frame in the opening 11 minutes. The Raiders were finally able to convert at the 11:48 mark when Williams converted.

Lafayette would not go away though as it answered with two quick attempts of its own. The first shot was wide but the second was scooped up by Colgate's Erin Cummings, keeping her shutout alive.

The Raiders took their one-goal advantage into the break and maintained the majority of ball possession throughout much of the second 45 minutes.

Colgate tried to add on outshooting its opponent 6-3 in the period, including a great opportunity from Caroline Parsons in the 60th minute. The junior's shot was saved by a Leopards' defender, however, keeping the visitors within reach.

But that would be as close as they got, as the Raiders held on the registered the 1-0 win.

The Raiders next head to Loyola on Tuesday for the Patriot League Quarterfinals.
