HAMILTON, N.Y. – Boston University netted the game-winner a little over four minutes into extra time to stun Colgate Men's Soccer here Wednesday night.
The Raiders held the majority of scoring chances early, testing the BU goalie right from the start. After the game evened out, both teams recorded solid chances with neither being able to tally the go-ahead marker, sending the match into overtime.
Two minutes into the extra period,
Ethan Kutler handed Colgate its best opportunity in overtime when he fired a shot on target from the left side of the field. Unfortunately, BU goalie Matt Gilbert was there to make the stop.
Nearly two minutes later, the Terriers recorded the game-winner when Anthony Viteri and Magnus Benediktsson played catch. Viteri received the ball on the right side of the field and found Benediktsson inside the 18-yard box. The first-year then one-touched it back to Viteri, who one-timed a shot past the outstretched arms of
Ricky Brown and into the lower right corner of the goal.
Brown finished with six saves, including a solid stop on a driven shot from T.J. Butzke, 15 minutes into the contest.
Colgate jumped on the attack early, forcing BU's goalie to make keys saves right off the bat.
Just two minutes into the contest, Kutler ripped a shot off a corner kick that forced Gilbert to make a brilliant diving save.
Almost immediately following that chance, the Raiders found themselves on a 2-on-1 breakaway opportunity. Kutler collected the loose ball and dribbled down the left side of the field, finding
Tyler Forbes on his right side. The senior then tried his luck on target but Gilbert was able to come up with the stop.
As the clock wound down on the first half, Kutler nearly put Colgate on top with a riffled shot from the top of the box. Unfortunately, Gilbert was there yet again to come up with the stop.
After the break, Colgate continued its offensive pressure with another solid chance on frame.
Jared Stroud played a beautiful throughball to a running Forbes in behind the BU defense. The Manlius, New York, native slid the ball between the legs of Gilbert and almost broke the goal line but at the last second a Terriers' defender cleared it away.
With six minutes remaining in the second half, the Raiders were awarded a free kick just outside the top of the box. Kutler stepped up to take the kick and launched a curling shot on goal. Gilbert collected the attempt, though, ending any Raider chances of pulling ahead.
After regulation ended scoreless, the Terriers secured the victory with a tally in the 95th minute.
Colgate travels to the reigning Patriot League champions Bucknell on Saturday for another conference matchup. Game time is slated for 3 p.m. on Emmitt Field at Holmes Stadium. Live stats will be available at the start of the game.

FROM THE SOURCE•
Colgate Head Coach Erik Ronning: (on the game) "I thought we played absolutely fantastic. We're just missing the finishing touch. We had a lot of really quality scoring opportunities. We didn't really give them a whole lot. We worked our tails off from start to finish, and it's unfortunate we lost because we deserve much better. We played great and I couldn't be prouder of our guys effort, but you've got to make plays and they made one more than we did tonight."
(on having a lot of quality opportunities early in the game) "Yea, you know we just didn't finish them. We created some really good chances. We started with a lot of energy and put them on their back heel. We've just got to show a little bit more composure in those situations. We had a couple really quality ones in the second half as well that could have been goals. Again, we've just got to tune up that part of our game and hopefully the next time out when we're creating these chances we can put a couple into the back of the net."
(on his team being close to breaking out during its next contest) "I hope so. We've got a really good team. BU is also a really good team, and these games in the league are always going to be decided by one play. Sometimes you get into a little goal scoring rut. It just take one play to hopefully open the flood gates a little bit and I know we have a lot of guys that can put the ball on the net. It's composure, it's confidence and we've just got to keep on doing what we're doing in a lot of ways and be confident in the goal mouth and around the 18. We have guys that can do it and we'll continue to work on it and get better."
UP NEXT• The Raiders head to Lewisburg, Pa. on Saturday for a 3 p.m. Patriot League contest with Bucknell.
