Colgate Outshoots Cornell in Rivalry Game

Raiders Battle Big Red But Fall Just Short, 1-0

ITHACA, N.Y. – Colgate Men's Soccer saw Cornell tally the eventual game-winner early in the contest and despite outshooting the Big Red, fell just short 1-0 Tuesday night.

The Raiders fired off 11 shots, including seven in the second half alone. One quality chance came with under a minute remaining in the opening period when the Raiders were awarded a free kick on the right side of the field. Ethan Kutler sent a low cross into the box from 25-yards out that found the head of Aram Ouligian. The first-year then tried to redirect the cross on target but his attempted sailed just high over the crossbar.

Another solid chance for the Raiders came in the 75th minute. Kutler showcased an impressive individual performance to get the ball out wide right to teammate Jared Stroud on the wing. The sophomore then sent a brilliant ball into the box, where Tyler Forbes one-timed a shot on goal. Unfortunately, the Big Red goalie came up with the quality save, keeping the hosts ahead by one.

The Raiders continued to try to find the equalizer in the remaining minutes but were unable to pull even.

Peter Tappenden posted four saves in his first career start.

The Big Red got on the board early after Eric Nuss scored on a deflected shot five minutes into the contest.

Midway through the period Forbes found Kutler with a great throughball in behind the Cornell backline. Just before the Raiders were able to finish it off the goalie came out to make the stop.

A few minutes later Colgate continued to pressure when Forbes tried his luck on frame with a driven shot from the top of the 18. Unfortunately, his attempt sailed just high over the crossbar.

After the break, the Raiders again tried to break through when they intercepted the ball at midfield. Kutler collected it and dribbled up the field before finding Abdel Sanogo on the left side of the field. The first-year then fired it home but before Colgate could celebrate, the referees called it back due to being offside.

Colgate's Tappenden kept the Raiders in the game when he made a diving save on a shot from Cornell's Chris St. Germain with less than 12 minutes to play.

In the closing minutes, Kutler launched a long-range shot that tested the Big Red goalie. Ultimately Cornell was able to hold on to the attempt, ending Colgate's hopes to netting the tying goal.

Colgate is back in action Saturday when it hosts Holy Cross at 7 p.m. on Beyer-Small '76 Field. Live stats and video are available at the start.
