Brawner Converts PK in PL Title Game

Raiders Fall Just Short of Patriot League Tournament Title

HAMILTON – Senior captain Caroline Brawner converted on a penalty kick late in the contest to make for an exciting final few minutes here Sunday in the Patriot League Championship Game.

Unfortunately, the Raiders were unable to finish the rally from two-goals down as they ultimately fell to Boston University, 2-1. The Terriers defended their tournament title, giving them two in as many years in the league.

Prior to the game, Colgate was awarded a trophy for earning its 12th regular season crown, 11th during the Kathy Brawn era. Also before the contest, sophomores Sarah Coy and Brenna Mason along with Brawner were given their prize for Offensive Player of the Year, Goalie and Scholar-Athlete of the Year, respectively. Coach Brawn received her Coach of the Year trophy as well prior to Sunday's contest.

BU jumped out to a quick lead eight minutes into the game on a Raiders' miscommunication in their own defensive half.

The Terriers extended their edge in the 64th minute creating a two-goal hole, but Brawner's solid penalty kick in the 78th minute made for an exciting finish.

Colgate fired off two solid chances in the remaining time but back-to-back saves off the goal line from BU kept the Raiders from equalizing.

Despite Colgate turning up the pressure even more in the last five minutes, the Terriers were able to hold on for the one-goal victory.

Mason recorded four saves in the game, including a goal-saving stop with 35 minutes left to play in the contest.

The Difference
• Colgate found itself in a two-goal hole in the 65th minute when Clare Pleuler slid one past Mason.
            - The played started after Jenna Fisher collected the ball on the right wing. She was able to find an opening and send a cross into the 18-yard box. Pleuler then one-timed the ball it into the lower left corner from five yards out.

Goal-Line Saves
• The Raiders made penalty kick gave them life with less than 13 minutes to play. Colgate used high-pressure and forced BU to make some key saves to keep the Raiders out of the net.
            - The first one came off a Jenna Raepple shot from outside the box. Parisi was able to just get a touch on it to push it up and over the net away from danger.17885
            - Goal-saving stop No. 2 happened following another Raepple attack when she dribbled down the left side of the field driving toward the endline. She cut it back and played the ball into Catherine Williams, who one-touched it over to Manoogian from eight-yards out. The senior captain then fired a shot on what looked like an open net but one of the Terriers defenders threw their body in front of the goal to stop the ball from crossing the line.
            - BU's defense again came up huge in the game when Williams looked to have found the back of the net. Following a brilliant Brawner corner kick into the box, Roche used her head to redirect a shot on frame. Parisi came up with the initial stop but couldn't fall on the rebound fast enough as Williams tried to poke in the follow up. Her attempt, however, was barely saved by the Terriers defense as they cleared it off the goal line for the second time in the contest.

Straight From The Source
Colgate head coach Kathy Brawn: (on her team's late rally) "When our backs were against the wall that was when we started to play the way we wanted to play, with great energy and getting numbers forward. Our players responded well to the circumstances but it was just too little too late, unfortunately, against a really good Boston University team. It didn't go our way today but I'm really optimistic for a potential at-large bid.

(On her team's possibility of getting an at-large bid into the NCAA Tournament) "We've done what we've needed to do this year to get some serious consideration. Of course, I'm a little bias but I really think we would be amongst one of those top teams deserving of that next step."

"Personally coaching this team has just been an absolute honor. We'd love to see this for all of our players but most importantly for our seniors that have gotten us to this point so far."
