Seely Paces Colgate at Navy Saturday

Senior Diane Seely Recorded 12 Kills to Lead Colgate in a 3-1 Setback at Navy on Saturday.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Senior Diane Seely notched a team-high 12 kills, but Navy defeated Colgate, 3-1 (25-20, 20-25, 26-24, 25-21), in Patriot League volleyball action Saturday at the Wesley A. Brown Field House.
 
Seely was one of two Colgate players to record double-digit kills as sophomore Kathleen Harris added 10. Sophomore Katie Stebbins pitched in eight and junior Brooke Shupyrt-Knoop added seven. Junior Jackie Macy dished out 24 assists and freshman Molly Smith pitched in 16. Sophomore Madison McAndrews led the Raiders with 17 digs while Shupyrt-Knoop added 10.
 
Junior Katie Sylakowski led all players with 15 kills and senior Alex Cassel pitched in 12 spikes to pace Navy. Junior Star Steele and freshman Rachel Fortner both posted double-doubles, with Steele recording 26 assists and 11 digs while Fortner finished with 25 assists and 13 bumps. Sophomore Alli Graf paced all players with 22 digs.

- Navy improved to 9-5 in Patriot League play and 12-11 overall as it picked up its fifth win in its last seven contests.
- Colgate dropped to 8-6 in conference action and 14-10 on the year with the setback.
 
How It Happened
- The first set saw Colgate race out to a 10-5 lead, only to see Navy use a 16-5 spurt to go in front, 21-15. The Raiders would pull within four moments later, but an attack error by the Raiders on set point gave the Mids a 25-21 victory and a 1-0 lead.
- Colgate evened the match with a 25-20 decision in the second set, breaking a 16-all tie with an 8-2 spurt on its way to the five-point victory.
- Navy took a 2-1 lead with a 26-24 triumph in a back-and-fourth third set that featured a total of 14 ties and seven lead changes. With the score tied at 24-all late in the frame, a service error by the Raiders and a kill by Maggie Phillips propelled the Mids to a 26-24 win and a 2-1 lead.
- Navy carried the momentum of its third-set victory into the fourth, scoring five of the first seven points of the frame on its way to building a 16-9 margin midway through the set. Colgate rattled off four straight points to pull within three, 16-13, but the Mids responded with three unanswered tallies to expand its advantage to 19-13. The Raiders made one last push, pulling within three points on three occasions, but a kill by Sylakowski on their third attempt at match point to post a 25-20 victory and win the match.

- The match featured a total of 27 ties and 13 lead changes. The third set was the most closely contested as it saw 14 ties and seven lead changes.
- Colgate hit .364 in the second set as it recorded 11 kills and was charged with no errors in 33 swings.
- Navy turned in its best hitting percentage of the match in the first set, posting a .278 attack clip (16-6-36) in that frame.
