Raiders Earn Split With Mountain Hawks

Colgate Women Record 147-139 Victory Over Lehigh; Men Suffer 190-88 Setback to Mountain Hawks

HAMILTON –
Colgate held on Saturday for a thrilling win over Patriot League foe Lehigh in women's swimming and diving at Lineberry Natatorium.
 
The Raiders edged Lehigh 147-139 in the women's meet and Colgate lost 190-88 on the men's side.
 
The women's race was a true nail-biter, with Colgate jumping to an early lead and the meet coming down to the last race. The Raiders needed at least a second-place finish in the 200 freestyle relay and they went 2-3 to close out the Mountain Hawks.

• Colgate women 147, Lehigh 139; Lehigh men 190, Colgate 88.
 
Women's Event Highlights
• The Raiders won a close race in the 400 medley relay, touching in 3:55.58 to Lehigh's 3:55.76. The Colgate team setting the early tone consisted of Meghan Shroyer, Cammie Kirby, Maggie Carney and Rosannah Petit.
Morgan Cohara won the 1,000 freestyle in convincing fashion, posting 10:24.61 for a nearly 24-second victory.
Flora Hanson won the 200 freestyle by 0.17 for another important victory. She touched in 1:54.68 to keep the momentum building for the Raiders.
• Cohara and Shroyer went 1-2 in the 100 backstroke. Cohara's time of 57.59 placed her just ahead of teammate Shroyer's 59.24.
• The 100 breaststroke was another important Colgate 1-2 placement. Kirby's time was 1:07.50 for first place, with Talia Fishbein second in 1:07.64.
• Bernadette Tankle finished second in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:09.74.
• Colgate's Petit and Sami Ware placed 2-3 in the 50 freestyle. The freshman's time was 24.21 to Wary's 24.39.
• Petit backed that up with another key result, second in the 100 freestyle with a time of 52.37.
• Hanson won a very close race in the 200 backstroke. Her time of 2:05.84 was 1.15 seconds better than the Lehigh finisher.
• Kirby won another close 200 breaststroke for the second meet in a row. Her time of 2:27.83 was 0.71 ahead of the Lehigh challenger.
• Cohara continued her winning streak in the 500 freestyle with a first-place time of 5:03.12. Tankle was third in 5:09.36.
• Carney finished third in the 100 butterfly with a time of 59.11.
• Colgate placed 2-3 in the 200 individual medley. Hanson was second in 2:08.43 and Shroyer third in 2:11.33.
• The Raiders then needed only a second-place finish in the 200 freestyle relay, which they got in a time of 1:38.60. Petit, Wary, Madison Fitzgerald and Megan Gallagher helped stave off the Mountain Hawks and win the meet by eight points.
 
Men's Event Highlights
• Des Cairns began his fantastic meet Satureay with a victory in the 100 backstroke. Cairns touched in 51.66 seconds.
• He just missed another victory in the 100 freestyle, finishing in 47.45 to the Lehigh winning time of 47.42.
• Paul Kersjes finished a terrific second in the 1,000 freestyle, posting a time of 10:02.89 that was four seconds shy of the winning time. Seamus Fitzhenry dropped almost 15 seconds off his time from two weeks ago at St. Bonaventure, posting 10:44.51 to place fourth.
• The Raiders won the 200 freestyle relay in a fantastic race, posting a time of 1:26.26 to Lehigh's 1:26.57. Racing for Colgate were Milos Gak, Cairnes, Carter Christensen and Andrew Hacker.
• Christensen placed third in the 50 freestyle with what his coach called a good season swim time of 22.00.
• The Raiders were very close second in the 400 medley relay, with Cairns, Mark Hilton, Dominic Wilkins and Hacker posted a time of 3:34.79. Lehigh won the event in 3:33.89.
• Hacker was third in the 200 freestyle in a time of 1:46.27.
• Haakon Brekke touched third in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:02.38. He also placed third in the 200 breaststroke in 2:18.82.
• Wilkins was third in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:03.41.
• Christensen added a third-place result in the 50 freestyle.
• Tommy Fretz was second in 1-meter diving.
