HAMILTON -- The U.S. women's eight set a world record over the weekend at the 2013 World Rowing Cup #3 in Lucerne, Switzerland, and Colgate had a big hand in the performance.
Former Raiders rower Lauren Schmetterling '10 was part of the gold-medal winning American squad that broke the previous world mark by one-hundredth of a second. The U.S. team crossed in a time of 5 minutes and 54.16 seconds, clipping the previous mark set by the United States boat one year earlier in Lucerne. Romania took second place in 6:00.42, with Canada third in 6:01.61.
"This was Lauren's first international competition with the U.S. team," Colgate head coach Greg Kruczynski said. "She was thrilled to join the U.S. National Team training center during this past winter, and she now will return for final selections for the World Championships in South Korea starting Aug. 25."
Kurczynski said he has not yet spoken to Schmetterling, but knows this is just the first taste of big-time success for his former team captain.
"Winning the World Cup regatta final witht a world's best time should put her in great position to make it to her first World Championships," he said. "We will be hearing big things from her for the next few years."
In addition to Schmetterling, who is from Moorestown, N.J., the U.S. women's eight was made up of coxswain Katelin Snyder of Detroit, Heidi Robbins of Hanover, N.H., Vicky Opitz of Middleton, Wis., Caroline Lind of Greensboro, N.C., Grace Luczak of Ann Arbor, Mich., Emily Regan of Buffalo, Kerry Simmonds of San Diego and Amanda Polk of Pittsburgh. Lind was the only holdover from the team that claimed gold at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London.
