HAMILTON – With the Patriot League Championships coming up in a couple of weeks, the Colgate men's swimming and diving team got a solid effort, highlighted by senior
Dan Sweeney in his final home meet, a 200-81 loss at the hands of UConn, in front of a packed house at Lineberry Natatorium.
The Raiders started the afternoon strong, with a second place finish in the 200 medley. Sweeney, along with teammates
Des Cairns,
Tavy Smith, and
Carter Christensen, clocked in at 1:37.01, just two seconds behind the UConn men.
Sweeney and Cairns performed well in the 50 free, taking second and third, respectively. Sweeney finished with a time of 21.50 seconds, with Cairns right behind at 21.96. Sweeney would round out his day placing in the 100 fly, clocking in at 52.04.
Next it was
Andrew Hacker, finishing second in the 1000 freestyle, at 10:02.92. Hacker was followed up by
Milos Gak, who placed in the 200 freestyle, at 1:46.60, just three seconds behind UConn.
Diver
Miles Ronbeck scored well in his events as well, posting a score of 222.67 in the 3-meter competition. He then notched a score of 227.24 in the 1-meter event.
The Raiders scored a pair of third place finishes, with
Paul Kersjes in the 500 freestyle and Cairns in the 100 backstroke. Kersjes finished in 4:53.97 in his event and Cairns clocked in at 53.09.
The day came to an end with a great performance in the 200 freestyle medley. Sweeney, Kersjes, Christensen, and Gak combined to finish in 1:29.15.
The Raiders will be back in the pool in two weeks as Colgate heads to the Patriot League Championships. This year, they will be heading to Bucknell. This year, the meet starts on Thursday, Feb. 21, until Sunday, Feb. 23.
