U.S. Rowing Release
HAMILTON – Former Colgate rower Lauren Schmetterling '10 is one of 11 women who just completed a training session with the U.S. Rowing Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif.
Schmetterling and the rest of the squad are working out in preparation for the 2013 competitive season, which culminates with the
World Rowing Championships set for Aug. 25-Sept. 1 in Chungiu, South Korea.
“I'm ecstatic for her, and she's going to do well,” Colgate head coach
Greg Kruczynski said. “Being one of 11 women invited to the U.S. Olympic training center is a terrific accomplishment.”
Schmetterling lettered all four season for the Raiders, and was a team captain in 2010.
“Her senior year, she really took a step up into the elite level of rowing nationally,” Kruczynski said. “And ever since she's graduated, she's just really furthered herself along, culminating in getting invited to the U.S. Rowing Training Center.”
A native of the Philadelphia suburb of Moorestown, N.J., Schmetterling also will be training near her hometown at the U.S. Rowing Center in Princeton, N.J. National team coaches Tom Terhaar, Laurel Korholz and Anne Kakela are leading the camps. The first took place Jan. 6-27, and the next one is scheduled for Feb. 7-17.
The camp roster includes several medalists returning from the 2012 Olympic Games in London, where the U.S. team won gold in the women's eight and bronze in the women's quadruple sculls.
