TOWSON, Md. (9/24/11) – Colgate junior running back
Zauhn Lewis ran for a career-high 144 yards and one touchdown, but it wasn't enough as the Raiders fell to Towson 42-17 Saturday night at Johnny Unitas Stadium.
Towson (3-0) scored three times in the third quarter to bust the game open after leading 14-3 at halftime. The Tigers scored 35 points in the second and third quarters after trailing 3-0 at the end of the first. Towson was led on offense by Terrance West who carried the ball 13 times for 85 yards and three scores.
Colgate (1-3, 0-1) was led by Lewis, who made his first collegiate start, carrying the ball 34 times for a game-high 144 yards and one touchdown. He also caught a career-high four passes for 17 yards. Sophomore quarterback
Gavin McCarney completed 14-of-27 passes for 113 yards and one touchdown, while rushing for 94 yards on 13 carries. Junior wide receiver
Jonathan Mputu also caught four passes for 41 yards and one touchdown.
The Raiders received the ball first and put together their longest drive of the season to take an early 3-0 lead. Colgate ran 17 plays, for 52 yards, milking 8:38 of the clock, before freshman
Joe Uglietto split the uprights with a career-long 40-yard field goal. The Raiders converted on two fourth down attempts to keep the drive alive and advanced the ball to Towson's 10-yard line, but a 15-yard penalty halted the drive forcing the field goal attempt.
The Colgate defense was strong in the first quarter holding Towson scoreless by forcing back-to-back three-and-outs during its first two possessions. The Raiders out gained the Tigers 75-to-20 in total yards and 10:50 to 4:10 in time of possession to keep the score 3-0 after one quarter.
Towson got on the board twice in the second quarter to build a 14-3 lead at the half. Both of the Tigers scores came after holding the Raiders short of fourth down attempts. Towson's first touchdown came on an 11 play, 78 yard drive, after Colgate went for a first down on 4th-and-8 on the Tigers 22-yard line. The Raiders then drove to the Towson 35-yard line on its next possession, but McCarney was sacked on 4th-and-5, to give the ball back to the Tigers who scored eight plays later.
Towson scored three more touchdowns in the third quarter to build a 35-3 lead, before Lewis found the end zone for the first time in his career to make the score 35-10. The Tigers scored one more time on a 4th-and-2 run from the Raiders 22-yard line to go up 42-10. McCarney connected with Mputu for a 5-yard touchdown pass with 21 seconds remaining to make the final score 42-17.
Towson out gained the Raiders in total yards 430-345, but Colgate won the time of possession 33:42 to 26:18. Colgate finished 3-for-4 in the red-zone, while Towson was a perfect 3-for-3.
Colgate will host Patriot League foe Fordham on Saturday, Oct. 1. The game is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. at Andy Kerr Stadium and can be seen live on Time Warner Cable Sports.
