SYRACUSE, N.Y. (9/25/10) — Junior running back
Nate Eachus (Drums, Pa.) rushed 35 times for 147 yards and one touchdown, but it wasn't enough as Colgate fell to its FBS rival Syracuse 42-7, Saturday afternoon at the Carrier Dome.
Colgate controlled the time of possession, and gained 376 yards of total offense but nine penalties dampened the Raiders attempt for their first win in the series since 1950.
Senior quarterback
Greg Sullivan (Monroe, N.Y.) threw for 146 yards and ran for 53, while senior wide receiver
Doug Rosnick (Langhorne, Pa.) recorded a career-high 10 receptions.
Colgate (1-2) opened the game with a 10-play, 55-yard drive that ended on the Orange's 15-yard line after a turnover on downs. Sullivan tried to connect with tightened
Nick Cvetic (Clifton, N.J.) on a 4th-and-3 play to keep the drive alive, but the pass was incomplete. Syracuse responded with a 12-play, 80-yard drive, but failed to score on fourth and goal as the Raiders defense sent enough pressure on quarterback Ryan Nassib to force an incomplete pass. Senior defensive end
Zack Smith (Thorafare, N.J.) applied the pressure.
Syracuse (3-1) would be the first to score when Delone Carter broke free for a 24-yard touchdown run with 4:51 left in the first quarter. The Orange would add to their lead late in second quarter with a 37-yard touchdown pass from Nassib to Antwon Bailey with a 1:43 remaining in the half.
Colgate controlled the time of possession in the first half, holding on the ball for nearly 24 minutes, and had 164 yards of total offense to the Orange's 169, but trailed 14-0.
Syracuse began the second half with a four play 59-yard scoring drive to build a 21-0 lead. The Raiders answered back with an 11-play, 64-yard drive that appeared to be a touchdown pass from Sullivan to Rosnick on 4th-and-5, but the play was overturned after an instant replay ruling, resulting in a loss on downs.
Syracuse would add another touchdown in the third quarter to build a 28-0 lead before Eachus found the end zone to begin the fourth quarter. The power back found an opening in the line and went untouched for a 12-yard score. Eachus provided the key play in the scoring drive with a nine-yard reception on 3rd-and-11, which opened the door for an 11-yard passing play from Sullivan to Rosnick on 4th-and-2.
The Orange would score two more touchdowns in the fourth quarter to secure their 15th-straight win in the series 42-7.
Senior linebacker
Chris DiMassa (Coatesville, Pa.) led the Raiders defense with eight tackles, while classmate
Mike Barry (Naples, Fla.) recorded one sack and forced a fumble that was recovered by junior
Greg Kafaf (Morristown, N.J.).
GAME NOTES: Eachus has rushed for more then 100-yards in all three game for the Raiders this season and now ranks 10th in the Colgate record books with 2,277 yards. Colgate controlled the time of possession 44:26 to 15:34 and finished 4-of-7 in fourth-down conversions. Colgate is now 31-30-5 in the all-time series against Syracuse, 0-4 at the Carrier Dome.
