HAMILTON, N.Y. (9/24/10) – The Colgate men's soccer team secured its first Patriot League win on Friday night when it defeated Lehigh 1-0 at home in its first conference game of the season. The Raiders improve their overall record to 4-0-3 and are now 1-0 in league play.
The game started off slow with most of the play going back and forth in the midfield, with neither team having any serious attempts on goal. As the half continued, the pace remained the same until the Raiders had a near miss in the 15th minute when a lobbed ball from 40 yards out hit the cross-bar. This ignited the Raiders' offense which eventually found the back of the net four minutes later after
Matt Schuber (Webster, N.Y.) volleyed the ball into the goal off a corner kick from
Mike Garzi (New Milford, Conn.) to give Colgate the 1-0 lead at half time.
In the second half, the Raiders continued to have majority of the ball possession as they continued to pressure Lehigh's defense. Midway through the half, the Mountain Hawks began to find some rhythm creating some close opportunities, with one in the last second of the game, but could not find the goal they desperately needed to tie the game, giving Colgate the 1-0 win.
"Our team put forth a great effort tonight," stated head coach
Erik Ronning. "They earned a quality win against a very good team."
The Raiders will resume play on Sunday, Sept. 26 when they travel to Brooklyn, N.Y. for a match-up against Long Island at 1 p.m.
