BOSTON, Mass. (2/16/10) – Three members of the Colgate women's crew team competed at the C.R.A.S.H. B indoor rowing championship in Boston, Mass. this past Sunday, Feb. 14. Senior
Lauren Schmetterling (Moorestown, N.J.) and freshmen
Kate Thomson (Vashon Island, Wash.) and
Gabby Cambanis (Athens, Greece) all competed in competition.
C.R.A.S.H.-B. is an international world indoor rowing championship, started by former US Olympic and World Team athletes, in which the rowers race against each other on ergometers. Beginning as a five mile race the distance was changed to 2,000m in 1996.
Schmetterling and Thomson both competed in the Open Weight category while Cambanis participated in the Lightweight category. Schmetterling was the top Colgate finisher, coming in ninth among 174 competitors with a time of 6:57.7. Thomson and Cambanis both set personal records with Thomson finishing in 45th place with a time of 7:26.7. Cambanis had a top thirty finish, coming in at 27th, out of 60 participants, with a time of 7:53.9.
While Schmetterling finished ninth place overall, her time was also good enough to earn a third place medaling finish in the collegiate division. Both the Open Weight and Lightweight categories featured international rowers, including several National Team Members as well as representatives from top colleges.
