Football Holds Annual End of Season Awards Banquet

Greg Sullivan
HAMILTON, N.Y. (2/13/10) – The Colgate football team held its annual awards dinner Saturday night at the Hall of Presidents on campus.

Colgate head coach Dick Biddle announced the offensive and defensive MVP's from the 2009 season to highlight the evening's activities.

The Andy Kerr Trophy, awarded annually to the most valuable offensive player, was given to senior wide receiver Pat Simonds (Sidney, N.Y.) and junior quarterback Greg Sullivan (Monroe, N.Y.).

Simonds finished the 2009 season with 66 catches for 1,012 yards and 14 touchdowns. His touchdown mark broke the previous record held by Tom Stenglein, who caught 13 touchdowns in 1985. Simonds is also the third wide receiver in school history to have consecutive 1,000-yard seasons. Corey Hill (1997-1998) and Luke Graham (2002-2003) pulled off that feat as well. Simonds finished fourth in both career receptions and receiving yardage in the Colgate record books, and earned first team all-Patriot League and third team all-American honors in 2009.

Sullivan started all 11 games in 2009 and improved to 18-4 as a starter in his career. Sullivan rushed for 788 yards and seven touchdowns, while passing for 1952 yards and 18 touchdowns. Sullivan was named Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week twice and ECAC Offensive Player of the Week once.

The Hal W. Lahar Trophy, awarded annually to the most valuable defensive player, was presented to senior defensive back Uzi Idah (Rolling Hills Estate, Calif.).  Idah finished with a team-high 67 tackles, 6.5 for a loss, and one interception. Idah was named first team all-Patriot League.

Other major awards were given to senior tight end Adrien Schriefer (Plainsboro, N.J.), who received the Tom Dodge Unsung Hero Award, and Brion Applegate '76, who received the Jack Mitchell Loyalty Award.

Schriefer battled back from a torn ACL in the first game of the season, to start in the final seven games. Schriefer ended his senior season with 29 all-purpose yards off two receptions.

Applegate currently serves on the University Board of Trustees and on the Colgate Football Maroon Council Board of Directors. Applegate lettered in Football 1974 and 1975.  In 1975 Applegate was Colgate's leading receiver with 25 catches for 510 yards and two touchdowns.  Applegate had two games (vs. Lehigh and William & Mary) with over 100 yards receiving.
