Women's Basketball Release #10: Raiders Begin Three-Game Home-Stand

The Raiders will travel to Worcester, Mass. to take on Holy Cross this Wednesday, Jan. 27 before beginning a three-game home-stand starting with Navy on Saturday, Jan. 30. Colgate will face the Crusaders at 7 p.m. at the Hart Center. Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m. against the Midshipmen.
 
Scouting the Crusaders
Holy Cross is looking to stop a two-game losing skid after falling to both American and Navy last week. The Crusaders lost on the road at Navy, 75-60, before losing at home to the Eagles, 64-51. Holy Cross which is 5-15 overall and 1-4 in the conference has yet to win a Patriot League game at home at the Hart Center. The Crusaders only league win came against Bucknell on Jan. 16, a 55-42 victory on the road. Seniors Bethany O'Dell and Briana McFadden are the squad's top two scoring leaders with O'Dell averaging 13.5 points and 1.5 steals per game while McFadden contributes 13.3 points and 2.4 assists per game. Whitney Fremeau tops the boards for the Crusaders pulling down an average of 5.3 rebounds per game along with 11.7 points. Head coach Bill Gibbons is in his 25th season at the helm of the Holy Cross women's basketball program and is the winningest coach in its history.
 
Scouting the Midshipmen
Navy is sitting in third place in the Patriot League standings after winning both its conference games last week to earn a 3-2 mark while improving to 11-9 overall. After suffering a 46-43 loss at Lafayette the Midshipmen won the next two at home starting with a 75-60 victory against Holy Cross followed by a 64-53 success against rival Army. Juniors Cassie Consedine and Angela Myers lead all Navy scorers with Consedine recording an average of 10.9 points, 7.0 rebounds and 1.3 blocks per game while Myers averages 10.0 points, 6.0 boards, 3.8 assists and 1.9 steals per game. Senior K.C. Gordon contributes 9.8 points and 5.1 rebounds per game for the Midshipmen. Stefanie Pemper returns for her second season as the head coach of the Navy women's basketball team after orchestrating the biggest one-year turnaround in school history, guiding the Mids to a 16-15 record last year.
 
Last Time Out
The Raiders dropped two league matches last week falling to defending Patriot League champion Lehigh, 57-45 on Wednesday, before suffering a 60-47 loss at Bucknell on Saturday afternoon. Colgate is now 1-4 in league play, tied for last place with Holy Cross, and holds a 6-13 mark overall. Rookie Jhazmine Lynch (San Diego, Calif.) led the Raiders in their loss to Lehigh scoring 11 points and grabbing eight rebounds. On Saturday, junior Sami Kozlowski (New Market, Md.) had a team-high 13 points for Colgate while classmate Krista Moser (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) collected seven boards.
 
Series vs. Holy Cross/Navy
 
Holy Cross – The Crusaders hold a 39-3 all-time lead in the all-time series against the Raiders, including a 16-0 record at their home court in Hart Center. This will be the first meeting between the two squads this season with the Holy Cross taking both games during the 2008-09 season. Their last match-up at the Hart Center, the Crusaders earned a decisive 75-57 victory as Briana McFadden scored a game-high 19 points while Whitney Fremeau added 18. Tayler Wejnert (Ramsey, N.J.) scored a team-high 18 points for Colgate and had seven rebounds and four assists.
 
Navy – The Midshipmen lead the all-time series 24-15 including both decisions last season. The Raiders kept it close in their first meeting, dropping a road game at Navy 48-40 mid-way through league play. The two teams next met in the last game of the regular season schedule with Colgate falling 65-35 at Cotterell Court. Emily Cordle and Kalen Kropa each scored 11 points for the Mids in that game while Colgate's Sami Kozlowski and Tayler Wejnert tallied nine points apiece.

Come out and support women's basketball this week as they take on Navy at Cotterell Court. Fans are encouraged to “Paint the Court Maroon” by wearing maroon shirts to the game. Leading the Way
Junior Sami Kozlowski is currently leading the Raiders in scoring with an average of 10.6 points along with 2.1 assists per game, while sophomore Tricia Oakes is averaging 10.3 points and 5.3 rebounds per game. Rookie Jhazmine Lynch is third in scoring and leads the freshmen class with 9.3 points and 1.7 steals per game. Junior Krista Moser follows Oakes in rebounding averaging 5.1 per game along with 4.8 points. 
 
Weekly Honors
Colgate freshman Jhazmine Lynch was named the Patriot League Anaconda Rookie of the Week for the week ending Dec. 6. It marked the second time this season that Lynch has been honored with the award. The rookie guard had 21 points, five rebounds, and seven assists last week. Lynch scored 12 points and had four assists against Bryant last Tuesday. On Thursday, she picked up nine points, two steals and three assists. The Rookie of the Week award has gone to a Colgate student-athlete 10 times since the start of last season.
 
Top Returners
The Raiders return 10 players to this year's squad, including four starters from the 2008-09 season. Junior Tayler Wejnert returns to the Colgate squad after appearing in 20 games last season. Wejnert led the team in scoring averaging 11.7 points per game, followed by fellow junior Sami Kozlowski who averaged 9.7 points and led the team in steals with 33 in 30 starts with the Raiders. Tricia Oakes led Colgate on the boards as a freshman, pulling down 6.0 rebounds in 22 games. Sophomore Candice Green also started in all 30 games for the Raiders last season averaging 6.5 points and 2.5 rebounds.
 
Preseason Picks
The Colgate women's basketball team was picked to finish seventh in the 2010 Patriot League preseason coaches and sports information directors poll. Defending champion Lehigh was selected to repeat this year, with 97 total points and 13-first place votes.  Following the Mountain Hawks in order are American (76, 3 first-place), Holy Cross (76), Navy (54), Bucknell (52), Army (50), Colgate (22) and Lafayette (21). Lehigh's Erica Prosser was chosen as the Preseason Player of the Year. 
 
Rookie Trio
Colgate welcomed three freshmen to this year's squad, center Lulu Brase of Lake Wylie, S.C., guard Jhazmine Lynch of San Diego, Calif., and guard Rebekah Ward of Montreal, Que.  
 
Up Next
The Raiders will next host Army and Lafayette as they wrap-up their three-game home stand next week. Colgate will face both teams for the second time this season first battling Army on Saturday, Feb. 6 followed by Lafayette on Wednesday, Feb. 10.
