Colgate Swimming Readies For Busy Weekend

Colgate swimming will face Binghamton and UMass this weekend

For the second consecutive season, the Colgate men's and women's swimming & diving teams will square off against  Binghamton and UMass in back to back days.  Saturday's meet at the Patricia A. Saunders Aquatic Center in Vestal, N.Y. will serve as the final road dual meet on the road in the 2009-2010 campaign.  The Raiders will then compete against UMass at Lineberry Natatorium Sunday morning. 

RAIDER MEN
Colgate's men come into this weekend with a 0-6 overall mark.  The Raiders dropped a 193-100 decision to Cornell last Saturday at Lineberry Natatorium.  Costas Hadjipateras, Dan Sweeney, and Robert Rutkowski were all double winners versus Big Red.  Hadjipateras led a one-two performance with Doug Parks in the 200 fly with a winning time of 1:57.44, while Sweeney and Rutkowski claimed the 50 free (21.61) and 100 fly (52.37) respectively.  Tucker Gniewek, Rutkowski, Sweeney and Hadjipateras combined to win the 200 free relay with a time of 1:25.99.

THE COMPETITION TO DATE
The Binghamton men are 2-5 overall.  The Bearcats fell to Buffalo 137-103 Monday at home in their last outing.  UMass is 3-2 overall and will swim Boston College Friday before heading to Hamilton.  The Minutemen fell to Yale 193-107 in their last dual meet on December 5, 2009.

LAST YEAR VERSUS BINGHAMTON
Colgate claimed four victories, but it wasn't enough in a 158-136 loss at the hands of the Bearcats at Lineberry Natatorium.  Tucker Gniewek led the charge by claiming victories in the 100 free, 100 fly, and 50 free.  The junior led a one-two-three sweep with Costas Hadjipateras and George Bennitt in the 100 free with a time of 47.75 and then later accomplished the same feat in the 100 fly with Hadjipateras and Henry Bottger after being clocked at 52.00.  Gniewek won the 50 free with a time of 21.73.  Hadjipateras (1:58.06) copped the final event for Colgate as he led a clean sweep with Casey Powers and Devon Healy in the 200 fly.

LAST YEAR VERUS UMASS
Devon Healy posted two of Colgate's three wins as the Raiders fell to the Minutemen 188-95.  Healy (16:47.83) and Casey Powers took the top two spots in the 1650 free.  The sophomore came back to post a 2:00.21 to claim the 200 IM.  The foursome of Pat White, Dan Lathrop, Costas Hadjipateras, and Teddy Perley swam a winning time of 1:29.05 in the final event, the 200 free relay. 

RAIDER WOMEN
Colgate enters the weekend with a three-meet win streak and a 4-3 overall record. The Raiders' last two meets have gone down to the final event.  Colgate captured first in the 200 free relay to hold on and defeat Cornell 156-144 last weekend.  The Raiders won 10 events and broke three pool records in the win over the visiting Big Red.  Caren Guyett and Erica Derlath were triple winners while Lia Kunnapas, Erin McGraw, and Emma Santoro each posted two wins.  The Raiders lowered three pool records in the process as well.  The team of Kunnapas, Caitie Curran, McGraw and Guyett bested the 400 medley relay record that had stood since 2001.  The foursome was clocked with a winning time of  3:54.46, which bested the former time of 3:55.37 set by Army.  Derlath touched in 4:27.31 in the 400 IM to break Colgate's Alice Garnett's former record of 4:27.53 set in 2001.  Finally, Kunnapas shaved .07 seconds off McGraw's former mark by winning the 200 back with a time of 2:04.36. 

THE COMPETITION TO DATE
The Binghamton women are 5-5 on the season, among which includes a most recent 134-105 loss to instate rival Buffalo, Monday.  UMass posted a 174-123 victory over Northeastern on December 5 to improve to 3-2 overall.  It will swim Boston College on Friday before heading to Hamilton.

LAST YEAR VERSUS BINGHAMTON
Bev Walker, Emily Murphy, and Ashley Bottger were all quadruple winners and Lisa Marchi won three events in a convincing 216-82 victory over Binghamton at Lineberry Natatorium.  Colgate won 14 of 16 events; took the top two spots in six races and the top three in five.

LAST YEAR VERSUS UMASS
Colgate broke three Joseph Rogers Pool records in a 171-124 victory over UMass.  The Raiders commanded firsts in 12 events and took the top two places in six of them.  Erica Derlath broke the record in the 1650 free (17:13.32) and Ashley Bottger erased the former standard in the 100 free (51.96).  The foursome of Emily Peck, Walker, Murphy, and Bottger posted a winning time of 1:36.71 in the final event, the 200 free relay, also a new pool record.
