Women Suffer Loss to Navy in Regular Season Closer

HAMILTON, N.Y. (2/28/09) -   The Colgate women's basketball team dropped their final regular season game, 65-35 against Navy on Senior Day at Cotterell Court.

Tayler Wejnert (Ramsey, N.J.) and Sami Kozlowski (New Market, Md.) led the Raiders with nine points apiece, while senior Gretchen Polinski (Mansfield, Ohio) tallied a game-high nine rebounds and registered seven points.

Both teams struggled offensively in the opening minutes, combining for just three field goals in the first five minutes.  The Mids (15-14, 8-6) then gained a nine point lead, 13-4, thanks to back-to-back three pointers from Emily Cordle and Kristin Bowen.

The Raiders (5-24, 1-13) were able to cut Navy's advantage to five a few minutes later as Georgia Gier (Mercer Island, Wash.) laid in consecutive baskets to make it 19-14 with 7:07 left in the half.  Navy responded by going on an 8-0 run before Wejnert knocked down a shot from long-range to stop the Mids attack at 27-17.  Navy finished the half with two more field goals to head into the break with a 32-17 lead.

The Raiders scored right away out of the break as Polinski knocked down a shot in the first 15 seconds of play.  The Mids then built their 13 point lead up to as many as 25 over the next several minutes.  Colgate began to chip away at Navy's advantage as Polinski put in another basket and picked up the foul for the extra point to cut the Mids lead to 22 points, 49-27 with 8:58 remaining in the game.  Navy grabbed their largest lead of the game, 31 points, a few minutes later as they held on for the win.

Kalen Kropa and Cordle were Navy's top scorers, registering 11 points each, while Kropa also led the team in rebounding with six boards.  The Mids got 35 points from off the bench with 11 players scoring at least two points or more in the game.

Colgate shot 25.5 percent (13-51) for the game, including 57.1 percent from the free throw line.  Navy knocked down 51.8 percent (29-56) of its shot from the floor and 35.3 percent from behind the arc.  The Mids controlled the glass, 33-26.
