Women's Basketball Release #4: Raiders Host Bryant, Travel to Cornell

Thursday, December 3- at Cornell, 7 p.m.

The Raiders will host Bryant University at Cotterell Court this Tuesday, Dec. 1, followed by a road game against regional rival Cornell on Thursday, Dec. 3. Colgate faced Bryant twice last year but hasn't taken on the Big Red since the 2007-08 season. Both games are scheduled for 7 p.m.
 
Scouting the Bulldogs
Bryant comes into Colgate with a 1-4 overall record after suffering two losses last week. The Bulldogs fell to St. Bonaventure 66-43 on Sunday after dropping an overtime match to Brown 79-72 on Nov. 24. Bryant's only win this season was against Patriot League opponent Lafayette, a 56-47 victory back on Nov. 21. Sophomore Lekia Cowen leads the Bulldogs in scoring averaging 11.2 points per game followed by junior Siamone Bennett with 8.6 points per game and a team-high 7.6 rebounds per game. Senior Kelsey O'Keefe adds 8.0 points and 6.0 boards, per game. Head coach Mary Burke is in her 18th season at Bryant amassing an overall record of 246-251. The Bulldogs return four starters from the 2008-09 squad that finished the season 11-18 overall.
 
Scouting the Big Red
Cornell is currently 3-3 overall and 2-1 on their home court. The Big Red split their two games last week defeating IUPUI 73-57 before falling to Albany 80-55. Cornell's other two wins this season were a 92-73 victory against Tennessee State and an 81-54 win against cross-town rival Ithaca. Seniors Allie Fedorowicz and Virginia McMunigal lead the Big Red in scoring averaging 14.3 and 11.8 points per game, respectively. Classmate Lauren Benson adds 9.5 points per game and has tallied a team-high 44 assists so far this year. Leading Cornell on the boards is sophomore Allie Munson with an average of 6.2 rebounds per game. Dayna Smith is in her eighth year at the helm of the Cornell women's basketball program. The Big Red also return four starters from last year's squad, which finished 10-16 overall, fourth in the Ivy League.
 
Last Time Out
Colgate's five-game winning streak to open the season, which was the best start in program history, ended on Saturday with a 61-43 loss against Central Connecticut State University (CCSU). The Raiders now hold an overall record of 5-1 this season.  Junior guard Sami Kozlowski (New Market, Md.) led the Raiders with 14 points, including 3-6 shooting from three-point range. Sophomore Candice Green (East Brunswick, N.J.) scored nine points with three assists, while classmate Tricia Oakes (Evergreen, Colo.) pitched in eight points and seven rebounds off the bench. Krista Moser (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) also grabbed seven boards to go along with six points.
 
Series vs. Bryant/Cornell
Bryant – Colgate faced the Bulldogs for the first-time ever last season, falling to Bryant twice during a ten-day road-trip. The Raiders first lost to the Bulldogs during the Fordham Tournament, falling 71-59 in their first game of the tourney. Colgate dropped their next meeting against Bryant, 63-53 in Smithfield, R.I. Sami Kozlowski led the Raiders in the first game with 16 points while Tricia Oakes picked up a game-high 12 rebounds. Tayler Wejnert (Ramsey, N.J.) led all scorers in their second match-up with 17 points, while Kozlowski added 14 points for Colgate. Oakes again had a game-high 11 rebounds. 
 
Cornell The Raiders hold a slight edge in the all-time series against the Big Red, leading 15-14. Cornell has won three of the last four meetings with their most recent win, 82-47, coming during the 2007-08 season. Colgate last defeated the Big Red during the 2003-04 season, 77-63. Katie Garman (Cedar Rapids, Ill.) led the Raiders as a sophomore in their last meeting against Cornell. Garman picked up 12 points and four rebounds followed by then freshman Sami Kozlowski with 10 points and five assists while classmate Kendra Brim (Buffalo, N.Y.) led the team in rebounding with six boards. 
 
Leading the Way
Junior Sami Kozlowski is currently leading the Raiders in scoring with an average of 12.7 points and 2.6 assists per game, while rookie Jhazmine Lynch (San Diego, Calif.) is averaging 10.7 points and 1.8 steals per game. Tricia Oakes adds 9.3 points per game and leads the Raiders in rebounding with 7.0 per game followed by Kendra Brim with 5.7 boards and 9.2 points per game. Sophomore Candice Green leads the team in assists averaging 3.5 per game and picking up 9.2 points per game. 
 
Weekly Honors
Freshman guard Jhazmine Lynch was selected as the Anaconda Patriot League Rookie of the Week last week. Lynch led the Raiders in a 72-65 victory against Rider scoring a career-high 25 points while collecting four assists three rebounds and two steals.  The freshman averaged 14.7 points in Colgate's three games wins last week, along with 3.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 2.0 steals.  Lynch connected on 42.3 percent of the field goals and was 20-of-22 from the free throw line.  This marks the first-ever weekly honor for Lynch and the first for a Raider this season.
 
Top Returners
The Raiders return 10 players to this year's squad, including four starters from the 2008-09 season. Junior Tayler Wejnert returns to the Colgate squad after appearing in 20 games last season. Wejnert led the team in scoring averaging 11.7 points per game, followed by fellow junior Sami Kozlowski who averaged 9.7 points and led the team in steals with 33 in 30 starts with the Raiders. Tricia Oakes led Colgate on the boards as a freshman, pulling down 6.0 rebounds in 22 games. Sophomore Candice Green also started in all 30 games for the Raiders last season averaging 6.5 points and 2.5 rebounds.
 
Preseason Picks
The Colgate women's basketball team was picked to finish seventh in the 2010 Patriot League preseason coaches and sports information directors poll. Defending champion Lehigh was selected to repeat this year, with 97 total points and 13-first place votes.  Following the Mountain Hawks in order are American (76, 3 first-place), Holy Cross (76), Navy (54), Bucknell (52), Army (50), Colgate (22) and Lafayette (21). Lehigh's Erica Prosser was chosen as the Preseason Player of the Year. 
 
Rookie Trio
Colgate welcomes three freshmen to this year's squad, center Lulu Brase of Lake Wylie, S.C., guard Jhazmine Lynch of San Diego, Calif., and guard Rebekah Ward of Montreal, Que.
