Strand To Be Honored at Homecoming

HAMILTON, N.Y. (10/1/09) – Former Colgate cheerleading coach Jill Strand will be honored between the first and second quarter at Saturday's Homecoming clash between Colgate and Cornell.

Strand, who worked within the Colgate Department of Athletics for 38 years in various capacities, retired prior to the 2008-09 season.

“We appreciate the work and enthusiasm Jill has shown to our athletics department,” said Colgate Director of Athletics Dave Roach.  “It's only fitting to recognize her at our Homecoming game.”

Strand began her association with Colgate back in 1970 when the institution first turned co-educational.  At that point, she was one of the first female physical education instructors at the school.  She taught swimming and archery among other activities.

After being named as cheerleading coach, Strand was visible within the circles of collegiate cheerleading.  She served on the Advisor Training Program with the University Cheerleaders Association (UCA) as well as served as a judge at High School Nationals in Disney World.  Prior to being named as head cheerleading coach at Colgate, she was on the Raiderette staff.

Jill is married to Al Strand, Colgate's professor of mathematics.
